The data from Sugarloaf Creek Basin (SCB) in Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park contained herein include forest inventory plots which were installed in 1970 and re-measured in 2017 for tree and shrub inventories; classified vegetation layers produced from raster images collected in 1973 from aerial orthophotos and in 2014 from satellites; spatially-distributed soil moisture measurements made from 2016-2018; and long-term in-situ weather station measurements made from 2016-2018. The Data directory contains four main data types. 1) In the root Data directory, three tabular data files containing information on trees and other vegetation cover in SCB in 1970 and 2014 (SugarloafForestryPlotData_x.csv) 2) In the root...

Removal of two large dams from the Elwha River, Washington USA, in 2011-2014 released ~20.5 metric tons (Mt) of impounded sediment, ~5.4 Mt of which was deposited in the river delta and estuary. This dataset presents measurements of geomorphic surfaces, vegetation colonization, and plant community development in the Elwha River delta and estuary after dam removal. Geomorphic surfaces and vegetation colonization were estimated from aerial imagery of the delta and estuary in 2016 and 2018. Plant community development was quantified from field plot surveys of pioneer plant communities on new surfaces in 2014 and 2018 and of established delta and estuarine plant communities on older surfaces in 2007, 2014, and 2018....

This dataset contains a series of maps of projected threats and current state of habitats for the threatened Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus). The maps are 30-m spatially explicit projections of current habitats (2016) and future landscape change (by 2070) for the full range of the species’ seven extant populations, which cover diverse ecoregions of the imperiled sagebrush biome of the western United States. Risk maps assessed projected changes caused by climate change-driven shifts in sagebrush habitats, mesic habitats, pinyon-juniper encroachment, and invasive annual grasses, as well as potentially synergistic risk of development and wildfire. We used a scenario-based risk assessment framework based...

A survey of environmental DNA was performed in Tunison Creek downstream of the USGS Tunison Aquatic Laboratory. The goal of the survey was to characterize the source ecological community at multiple trophic or taxonomic levels by associating DNA fragments with reference databases. Three taxonomically informative genetic loci were used: the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 locus, the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal locus, and the bacterial/organellar 16S ribosomal locus. The data set includes a list of sample and sequence accessions residing in the National Center for Biotechnology Information databases, which provide the raw data for analysis or re-use. The data also includes the representative sequences of operational...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected low-altitude airborne visual imagery via a multirotor, small unoccupied aircraft system (sUAS) along with Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS survey data at three study sites (Beasley Flat, Childs, and Sheep Bridge) along the Verde River in Arizona in December 2017. Visual imagery was collected in jpg format and Structure from Motion techniques were applied to the visual imagery to derive a time-specific high-resolution orthomosaic for each of the three study sites.
