The National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 requires every national forest or grassland managed by the U.S. Forest Service to develop and maintain a Land and Resource Management Plan (often referred to as a forest plan). The forest plan is the principle long-range guidance document for each forest or grassland, providing direction for project and activity decision making. Forest plans articulate goals and objectives, the kinds of uses that are suitable for areas of a national forest, management standards and guidelines that apply to different kinds of activities, and the designation of special areas like Research Natural Areas. Forest plans are strategic in nature and do not compel any action or authorize...

A battery of questions was developed and applied to different stakeholders immersed in knowledge of the condition and the use of grazing of grasslands. One hundred people were surveyed amongst livestock producers (both from private ranches and from communal ejidos), and students and researchers at regional institutions involved in agricultural sciences in different states of Mexico: Coahuila, Durango, San Luis Potosí, and Jalisco. The objective of the survey was to determine aspects of stakeholders’ interpretation of the condition of grasslands in their region under conditions of extensive grazing, such as soil condition, harvest efficiency, vegetation condition, openness to community organizing of grazing, capacity...

About: The beneficial management practices found in this online tool were compiled by experts involved in the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s (CEC) North American Grasslands: Management Initiatives and Partnerships to Enhance Ecosystem and Community Resilience and Catalyzing North American Grasslands Conservation and Sustainable Use Through Partnerships projects. Around one hundred beneficial management practices were identified through a meta-analysis of publications, reports, and documents regarding grassland stewardship from ranchers, ranching associations, conservation organizations, government programs and academic institutions published between 1993 and 2013. While practices range from the use...
Natural grassland ecosystems across the United States are diverse, shaped and governed by a range of floristic, edaphic, physiographic, and climatic factors. North American grasslands, which are between 30Ëš and 60Ëš latitude and include the grasslands of the American Southwest, are considered temperate grasslands.

The Central Arizona Grassland Conservation Strategy (CAGCS) was signed (2010) by three signatory agencies to the charter with complementary roles and responsibilities in managing historic grassland ecosystems and/or the wildlife species that inhabit them. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) management emphasis within the Agua Fria National Monument (AFNM) is to conserve and restore diverse habitats, vegetative communities and corridors of connectivity to sustain a wide range of native species. The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) hold the public trust responsibility of managing the wildlife that inhabits these ecosystems. This includes but is not limited to gathering and managing wildlife data, and providing...

BLM’s Resource Management Plans (RMPs) form the basis for every action and approved use on the public lands. The BLM prepares RMPs for areas of public lands, called planning areas, which tend to have similar resource characteristics. Planning emphasizes a collaborative environment in which local, state, and tribal governments, the public, user groups, and industry work with the BLM to identify appropriate multiple uses of the public lands. Plans are periodically revised as changing conditions and resource demands require. RMPs are used by managers and the public to accomplish the following: Allocate resources and determine appropriate multiple uses for the public lands; Develop a strategy to manage and protect...
It was just over a year ago that National Wildlife Federation, South Dakota State University’s Department of Natural Resource Management, and the North Central Sun Grant Center started talking about putting on a conference that would address the growing concerns surrounding the preservation of America’s grasslands – one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. It is estimated that tallgrass prairies and savannas of the mid-western states have declined by as much as 99% as a result of habitat fragmentation, conversion to cropland, and undesirable habitat changes due to fire exclusion, improper grazing management, and use and spread of invasive and non-native plants, among other factors. The ecological and...
In early fall of 2015, the National Wildlife Federation hosted the third America’s Grasslands Conference – in Fort Collins, Colorado in partnership with Colorado State University and the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. As a harbinger of conservation successes and lessons learnt, one of the field trips was to the Soapstone Natural Area where a few weeks later, a herd of Bison charged in to the public grassland for the first time in a century and a half. The conference centered on promising partnerships for grassland conservation and was attended by over 230 participants with diverse backgrounds from researchers and conservationists to producers and policymakers. The conference ran from September 29th to October...

Currently in Mexican arid regions, high pressure is applied to natural resources for their utilization, principally in the form of: uncontrolled grazing omnipresent in every corner accessible to cattle, opening high risk lands up for crop production, overexploitation of aquifers, discharge of contaminated waters, riparian areas drying up, exploration and uncontrolled exploitation of natural goods: flora, fauna, oil, gas, etc., without promotion of participatory activities for resource conservation and improvement among users, which results in a poor understanding of the precarious condition of the grassland environment.

In August 2013, the National Wildlife Federation joined forces with Kansas State University to host the second ever America’s Grasslands Conference - held in Manhattan, Kansas. Only a short drive from the Konza Prairie Biological Station, which just recently celebrated its 40th Birthday, the conference was located in an ideal spot to talk about grassland conservation and the future of grasslands. The conference was attended by around 215 participants from across the country, including a diverse group of researchers, conservationists, ranchers, federal and state policy experts, graduate students, and many others. The conference, which ran from August 12-14, featured over 65 speakers and included a riveting keynote...
The semi-arid grasslands in the Mexico-United States border region are relatively intact and provide one of the best opportunities in North America to preserve and nurture an extensive series of grassland ecosystems. The conference was organized to increase appreciation for the importance of the remaining semi-arid grasslands and to create a platform for expanding the integration of natural and social sciences among individuals and organizations. The conference was attended by ranchers, environmentalists, academics, and agency personnel from both nations. Main topics include grassland ecology and biodiversity, management and conservation, and sustainable borderland ranching. Endangered species management, especially...

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide the means for storing, querying, analyzing, correlating, modeling, and displaying digital cartographic data, remotely sensed imagery, and geographically referenced field survey and sampling data. In the business of managing public lands, the BLM collects and utilizes this data as it relates to or describes a piece of land and the resources on and under it. Data might be information about bird nesting sites or wild horse herd use areas. It might be legal land survey information or legal descriptions of land parcels. Real-time fire progression maps and maps-on-demand are two other customer products developed from this data. The common thread is that this information...
