This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This layer also contains information about potential habitats based on the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings data layer. This layer was developed to support the next iteration of the Conservation Blueprint developed by the...

In September 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, conducted high-resolution geophysical mapping and sediment sampling to determine the distribution of historical mine tailings on the floor of Lake Superior. Large amounts of waste material from copper mining, locally known as “stamp sands,” were dumped into the lake in the early 20th century, with wide-reaching consequences that have continued into the present. Mapping was focused offshore of the town of Gay on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, where ongoing erosion and re-deposition of the stamp sands has buried miles of native, white-sand beaches. Stamp sands are also encroaching onto Buffalo Reef, a large...
This data release contains the output of the Irrigation Water Use Estimation Disaggregation and Downscaling Model (IWUEDD) along with the scripts and data resources (IWUEDD_basic.zip) required to replicate the output results. The IWUEDD is used to estimate monthly irrigation withdrawals and consumptive use for each 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC 12) subwatershed in the conterminous United States. The HUC 12-level estimates are separated into groundwater (GW), surface water (SW), groundwater and surface water combined (TW), and consumptive use (CU). The IWUEDD developed monthly estimates by disaggregating and downscaling previously published annual county-level irrigation withdrawal and consumptive use data complied...
