This data release compiles the electron microprobe spot analyses of U, Th, and Pb concentrations in uraninite (U oxide) particles, and corresponding calculated age determinations, measured in samples of ore from two uranium-copper breccia pipe ore bodies, the Canyon (Pinyon Plain) and Hack II deposits. The U-rich samples that were analyzed typify the deposits hosted by solution-collapse breccia pipes in the Grand Canyon region of northwestern Arizona. Applying procedures outlined by Bowles (1990), the U, Pb, and Th measurements from each spot analysis were used to calculate a model age for the formation of each uraninite particle. The U, Pb, and Th analyses and calculated age determinations are provided as additional...
This is a geochemical data set from the reanalysis of 44 rock samples collected between 1966 and 1970, and 107 sediment samples collected in 1966 and 1967. These samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for a study investigating the mineral resources of the Idaho Primitive Area (Cater et al., 1973). The samples are from the Lower Middle Fork of the Salmon River, including the tributaries of Big Creek, Camas Creek, Brush Creek, Wilson Creek, Waterfall Creek, Ship Island Creek, Reese Creek, Stoddard Creek, and Papoose Creek. The overall objective of this study is to characterize the regional impact of legacy mining for the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. Mary P. Rossillon (1981) explored...

The Mohorovicic discontinuity or 'Moho' maps the boundary between the earth's crust and mantle and is defined by an abrupt change in seismic velocity due to changes in the density of rocks between the crust and mantle. GeoTIFF grids that map depth to Moho (crustal thickness) for the United States and Canada, and for Australia are provided in this report and were used as evidential layers in developing prospectivity models for basin-hosted Pb-Zn mineralization (Lawley and others, 2022). A composite grid of Moho depths across the United States and Canada was created using data from Shen and Ritzwoller (2016) for the conterminous United States, from Zhang and others (2019) for Alaska, and from Schetselaar and Snyder...

This data release is part of a 2016-2019 study on the geology, geochemistry and geochronology of ore systems in the eastern Yukon-Tanana Upland region, Alaska. Whole rock chemistry was conducted on 185 samples, mostly from Au prospects, with lesser samples from porphyry Cu prospects. Geographically, most samples are from gold prospects near the Pogo Au mine and east to Black Mountain in the Big Delta quadrangle. Fewer samples are from prospects in the Eagle and Tanacross Quadrangles. Samples were submitted to the USGS contract laboratory and analyzed for select trace elements and gold. Sixty elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy-mass spectroscopy (ICP-OES-MS), sodium...

The mineral pyrrhotite, which is an unstable sulfide mineral, was present in crushed stone aggregate used in concrete foundations of homes in Connecticut and Massachusetts, many of those foundations are failing as the mineral weathers. Because of the substantial costs of lifting homes and replacing their foundations, in 2019 the U.S. Congress directed the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Mineral Resources Program to help assess the national risk of pyrrhotite in aggregate. The data presented here help form a map that shows where pyrrhotite may occur across the conterminous United States, which can help inform risk assessments. Pyrrhotite occurs in some mineral deposits, and it also forms from pyrite during metamorphism,...
HySpex by NEO (HySpex) VNIR-1800 and SWIR-384 imaging spectrometer radiance data were acquired on September 14, 2017 at the Cresson Pit of the Cripple Creek & Victor mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado. ASD FieldSpecⓇ NG data were collected on September 13 and 14, 2017 at two calibration sites within the Cresson Pit imaged with the HySpex imaging spectrometers. The HySpex VNIR-1800 imaging spectrometer is a push broom type instrument that utilizes 1800 pixels to collect 186 channels of spectral data in the region of 400 to 1000 nanometers (nm). The spectral sampling interval of the HySpex VNIR-1800 is 3.26 nm with a 17° field of view (Norsk Elektro Optikk AS, 2016b). The HySpex SWIR-384 imagining spectrometer is a push...

This data release presents the major and trace element chemistry of rock samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from trenches, channel cuts, test pits, and surface exposures of the Dotson and I and L Zone rare earth element deposits at Bokan Mountain, located in the southern part of Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. Bokan Mountain was formed by an Early Jurassic peralkaline igneous complex that intruded into lower Paleozoic rocks of the Alexander terrane of southeast Alaska. The pluton and surrounding country rocks host numerous mineral deposits and occurrences, including heavy rare earth element (HREE)-rich pegmatites and felsic dikes, as well as mineral deposits rich in uranium, thorium,...
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains data from stream water, groundwater, and soil samples collected in 2019 and 2020 in the North Quartz Creek watershed in central Colorado. Fourteen streambank wells were installed in pairs at seven locations in August 2020 to capture the emerging groundwater from the left bank and right banks (relative to downstream-facing direction) and a synoptic sampling campaign was conducted to quantify metal contributions to the stream. A continuous, instream injection of sodium bromide (NaBr) was initiated at the head of the 5 km study reach several days prior to the synoptic sampling campaign and maintained throughout the duration of the study. Bromide concentrations...

This data release includes estimates of potassium (K), equivalent uranium (eU), and equivalent thorium (eTh) for the conterminous United States derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's national airborne radiometric data compilation (Duval and others, 2005). Airborne gamma ray spectrometry (AGRS) measures the gamma-rays that are emitted from naturally occurring radioactive isotopes found in rocks and soil, the most abundant of which are potassium (K40), uranium (U238), and thorium (Th232). Radiometric data can aid in exploration of critical mineral resources, including deposits of barium, fluorine, titanium, beryllium, niobium, rare-earth elements, and uranium. There is also growing interest in using radiometric...

Twenty-five ore and gangue mineral separates from the Miocene-age Goldfield and Tonopah epithermal Au-Ag deposits in southwestern Nevada were analyzed to determine the helium, neon, and argon (He, Ne, and Ar) isotopic compositions contained in fluid inclusions. Four mineral separates from the Butte Main Stage vein deposit and two from the Bingham pyrite-enargite vein deposits were also analyzed. Fifteen separates are from hand samples collected from underground mine workings and the remaining 16 are from mine tailings piles and pits excavated within the past 100 years. The separates consist dominantly of pyrite, enargite, and quartz, with lesser amounts of sphalerite, galena, potassium feldspar, bismuthinite, marcasite,...
