Invasive annual grasses, such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), have proliferated in dryland ecosystems of the western United States, promoting increased fire activity and reduced biodiversity that can be detrimental to socio-environmental systems. Monitoring exotic annual grass cover and dynamics over large areas requires the use of remote sensing that can support early detection and rapid response initiatives. Here, we integrated in situ observations, weekly composites of harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) data, maps of biophysical variables (e.g. soils and topography) and machine learning techniques to develop fractional estimates of exotic annual grass cover at a 30-m spatial resolution from 2016 to 2018....

This release contains geophysical data from the Kuparuk aufeis associated with the manuscript "Seasonal thaw dynamics of an aufeis feature inferred from surface geophysical methods." Data were collected in two campaigns in September 2016 and April 2017 with the purpose of investigating freeze-thaw dynamics below the aufeis feature during maximally frozen and maximally thawed conditions. Ground penetrating radar common offset data from both campaigns (160MHz and 80MHz) is presented, including interpreted depths to interfaces (permafrost, ice-frozen ground interface, and talik surface). This data release documents streambed sediment thickness in the Neversink watershed (NY) as determined by field observations and HVSR passive seismic measurements, and were collected as an extension of a previous data set collected in the same watershed (see Associated Items). These measurements were made between May 17, 2021 and May 21, 2021 using MOHO Tromino three-component seismometers (MOHO, S.R.L.). Seismic observations were converted to sediment thickness (depth to bedrock, meters) using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method. The U.S. Geological Survey collected geomorphic monitoring data in cooperation with the Upper Colorado River Wild and Scenic Stakeholder Group. This data release contains cross-section geometry and sediment-size distribution data collected from five sites on the Upper Colorado River, Colorado during April 6-8, 2022. The five sites selected for monitoring were located at the Pumphouse Recreation Area, Radium Recreation Site, State Bridge, above Catamount, and below Sweetwater Creek. A cross section was surveyed at each site using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System survey methods to document the channel geometry. The U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center collected data to investigate sediment dynamics in the shallows of San Pablo Bay and sediment exchange between bay shallows and the tidal salt marsh in China Camp State Park in a series of deployments between December 2013 and June 2016. This data release includes two related groups of data sets. The need to monitor change in sagebrush steppe is urgent due to the increasing impacts of climate change, shifting fire regimes, and management practices on ecosystem health. Remote sensing provides a cost-effective and reliable method for monitoring change through time and attributing changes to drivers. We report an automated method of mapping rangeland fractional component cover over a large portion of the Northern Great Basin, USA, from 1986 to 2016 using a dense Landsat imagery time series. 2012 was excluded from the time-series due to a lack of quality imagery. This dataset contains generalized lithologic classes (rocktypes) as reassigned from the USGS state geologic map compilation for the conterminous United States (Schweitzer, 2011). Lithology was classified into 12 generalized categories using the fields LITH62 and LITH62MINO available in Schweitzer (2011). Bathymetric and topographic surveys were collected along an approximately 47-kilometer reach of the Colorado River beginning at the Pumphouse Recreation site and extending downstream to the USGS streamgage located near the Colorado River Road (Catamount) bridge. The surveys were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers by USGS personnel during several time periods between May 13, 2021, through July 26, 2023, using a combination of sonar and wading techniques. This produced dataset includes spatially aggregated records of measurements and observations from public and private organizations across the Upper Missouri River Basin. For this dataset the Upper Missouri River Basin is defined as Hydrologic Unit Code 1002-1013, and includes the states of Montana, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Streamflow measurements are an essential part of understanding the relationship between streamflow permanence and climatic and physical factors. For the purpose of this investigation, all streamflow observations were identified as perennial, non-perennial, or pooled to be used in the PROSPER (PRObability of Streamflow PERmanence) model.

The Little Mountain Ecosystem in southwestern Wyoming has been identified as a priority area for conservation by the BLM and the WGFD. The woodlands of the Little Mountain Ecosystem have been affected by multiple disturbance types over the last 20 years. Active management of these ecologically important woodlands has sought to rejuvenate decadent aspen stands and reduce conifer expansion in successional aspen stands through prescribed fire and mechanical thinning. The area also experienced wildfires and multiple drought years over the last decade. Chemical data from 43,334 wells were used to examine the role of land surface-soil-aquifer connections in producing elevated manganese concentrations (>300 µg/L) in United States (U.S.) groundwater. Elevated manganese and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were associated with shallow water tables and organic-carbon rich soils, suggesting soil-derived DOC supported manganese reduction. Manganese and DOC concentrations were higher near rivers than farther from rivers, suggesting river-derived DOC also supported manganese reduction.
