These are shapefiles and ARC/INFO coverages of coal fields and coal-bearing formations in the Colorado Plateau. These GIS layers were created by combining numerous ARC/INFO coverages created for the Colorado Plateau coal assessment. The coal field outlines are approximate boundaries based on criteria provided below under Data Quality Information, Process Steps. These coal field outlines may not overlap exactly with other published coal field boundaries or with criteria used in the geochemistry data. We used existing polygons taken from numerous digital geologic maps, as described in Process Steps, but did not use overburden cutoffs.

These are shapefiles and final unioned polygon coverages used to calculate coal resources of the A through D coal zones, Yampa coal field, northwestern Colorado. Yamafing was used for the A coal zone, yambfing was used for the B coal zone, etc. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, leased areas, net coal thickness categories, and overburden categories. The final unioned coverage for each coal zone, was clipped by the resource boundary polygon of each coal zone. These polygons are described in the metadata files for the yam_bnd coverages.

These are shapefiles and ARC/INFO polygon coverages showing the isopachs of total net coal in beds greater than or equal to 1.2' thick for the A through G coal zones, Danforth Hills coal field. The coverage danathkg is the isopach coverage for the A coal zone; danbthkg is for the B coal zone, and so on.

These are shapefiles and coverages of final unioned polygon coverages used to calculate coal resources of the Cameo/Fairfield coal group east of 107 deg 15' longitude, and the Cameo/Wheeler, South Canyon, and Coal Ridge coal zones west of 107 deg 15' longitude in the southern Piceance Basin, northwestern Colorado. Pscbfing was used for the area east of 107 deg 15' longitude; pscwfing was used for the Cameo/Wheeler coal zone; psscfing was used for the South Canyon coal zone; pscrfing was used for the Coal Ridge coal zone. ESRI GRID raster datasets were created to display and quantify nahcolite resources for eight oil shale zones in the Piceance Basin, Colorado as part of a 2009 National Oil Shale and Nahcolite Assessment. The zones in descending order are: L-5, R-5, L-4, R-4, L-3, R-3, L-2, and R-2. Each raster cell represents a one-acre square of the land surface and contains values for nahcolite tonnage. The gridnames follow the naming convention *_n, where "*" can be replaced by the name of the oil shale zone.

These are shapefiles and coverages that represent areas of combined State and Federal coal leases and mined-out areas in the Yampa coal field. Yamaleasg contains polygons for which resources were not calculated for the A coal zone. Yambleasg contains polygons for which resources were not calculated for the B coal zone, etc.

This is a coverage of the Colorado Plateau coal assessment study area. The study area outline was drawn on the county lines that most closely outline the coal-bearing rocks in the Colorado Plateau Region. The county outlines originate from a national coverage for which lines were extracted from U.S. Census 1990 TIGER/line files using an AML program written by Nebert, D., and Negri, M., USGS-Water Resources Division (WRD), running on two Data General 6220 servers.

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of generalized geology in the Green River Basin. This geology shapefile was produced as part of the National Coal Resource Assessment of the Northern Rocky Mountain and Great Plains Fort Union Coal Resources Assessment Area. This geology can be shown in relation to other relevant themes in the green River Basin.
