In May 2014, the GNLCC Steering Committee approved two pilot projects explore approaches to landscape-scale coordination to enhance science-based management across the GNLCC. The two ‘Shared Landscape Outcomes’ pilots were designed to assess and focus on specific pairs of a GNLCC Goal and a priority landscape stressor (as defined in the Strategic Conservation Framework) and focus the approach at the entire GNLCC scale. The two pilot projects focused on (1) the Connectivity goal and Land Use Change stressor (described here) and (2) the Aquatic Integrity goal and Invasives stressor and (see: https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog )Connectivity Pilot:Wildlife species are becoming increasingly isolated in patches of habitat,...

The White House Council for Environmental Quality has identified two national watersheds to pilot large-scale drought resiliency implementation. The Missouri Headwaters Basin within the GNLCC region and High Divide landscape is one of these national demonstration areas, and the GNLCC can advance its collective mission with this opportunity. By delivering science to management and building a learning network among watershed groups, this project will align the large-scale watershed management efforts of the GNLCC with the National Drought Resiliency Program (NDRP) and the Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC) to build drought resilience into this important northern Rocky Mountain landscape.FY2015and FY2016The...

The project will establish contact with interested parties in each tribe or first nation within the Crown of the Continent to collect information on all relevant activities and research regarding climate and adaptive management within each tribal nation. We will coordinate a meeting of all interested tribal contacts and coordinate tribal activities with other efforts in the Crown including the Crown Managers Partnership, the Crown of the Continent Conservation Initiative, and the Crown Roundtable Adaptive Management Initiative. Objectives:Establish a contact on climate adaptation management in each interested first nation/tribe or related organization in the Crown of the Continent.Develop a white paper that summarizes...

This project aims to provide large landscape practitioners of the U.S. Northern Rockies with a decision support tool for prioritizing conservation action to mitigate road impacts on wildlife corridors. We will overlay analyses of corridor network centrality with analyses of wildlife-vehicle collision risk to identify where high-importance corridors meet high-impact road segments. Our findings will establish a rigorous, transparent basis for focusing road mitigation efforts where they will yield the greatest benefits to region-wide connectivity, and will be conveyed in the form of web-based map tools, a comprehensive written report, and a workshop for large landscape practitioners. Objectives:The primary objective...

We propose to work with the Rocky Mountain Partnership Forum to expand upon the successful approach applied in the first two years of this project to help managers incorporate climate change science into their natural resource management decisions for a new resource of interest that will be chosen by the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum members. This project will be implemented through the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum to share information with and among partners about emerging climate science and strategies for integrating climate change into natural resource management decisions in the region. We will also support the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum Leadership Team as it seeks to formalize the Forum and set directions...

Increased network capacity is a priority identified by the GNLCC and the RMPF Leadership Team to build on the organizational structure of LCC Partner Forums. Partner Forum organizations are intentionally inclusive collections of key decision-makers and stake-holders in the region who facilitate the flow of information and ideas, the delineation of shared priorities, and the advancement of projects leading to mutually beneficial outcomes. The ability of a Partner Forum to provide these services is directly related to the efficacy of its network. As the Partner Forum network improves, it successfully applies the outcomes of its work across the Rocky Mountain region and the greater GNLCC area. The importance of building...

The purpose of the proposed project is to increase the cross cultural capacity of indigenous and non-indigenous groups to collaborate on climate adaptation in the Crown of the Continent (CoC) a sub-region of the GNLCC area. In order to achieve this purpose, the objectives of this project are to conduct a pilot study 1) to identify the necessary protocols for collaboration between the Blackfeet Nation and government and non-government agencies active, and 2) to identify the priorities of the Blackfeet Nation in climate change adaptation. The outcomes of this project will include both written and presented material on the priorities of, and protocols for working with the Blackfeet Nation, including a widely distributed...
