For Tribes where significant knowledge of traditional management practices is intact, but where all or part of ancestral lands are managed by other agencies, it is important that the sharing of TEK and implementation of management take place in a manner that promotes rather than hinders Tribal sovereignty and self-determination. This project will identify existing institutional and cultural barriers to the sharing of Tribal TEK and expansion of Tribal management and provide recommendations for their resolution at local, regional and national levels.

Land managers have incorporated threats to biodiversity for nearly two decades, but very few efforts have included threats from future conditions and fewer still have assessed vulnerability to climate change. This project will address two themes: 1) providing foundational information about habitat fragmentation and connectivity and 2) identifying the degree of vulnerability of key habitats to climate change. For development of understanding broadextent, a landscape-level pattern of climate change is an important complement to approaches to estimate rangeshifts for certain key focal species. Ecological system types (i.e. coarsefilters) are widely used in conservation planning because they contain valuable resources...

The overall project goal is to understand and model the watershed impacts of forest restoration actions (thinning, prescribed fire) and climate change on the hydrologic function, particularly with respect to (1) changes in soil moisture and water yield during snowmelt, (2) inter-annual and directional changes in stream water quality, and (3) the resulting impacts on watershed management for wildlife species threatened by disturbance and climate change.Specifically, we will: use known relationships of forest structure on snow-water equivalent (SWE) values and processes of sublimation (ablation), infiltration and run-off in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico to model forest-stand restoration prescriptions,...

This dataset has three data layers. The first represents the richness of potential habitat for selected focal species in Florida. The second represents all potential habitats in Florida for selected focal species, in binary format (true/false).This third represents all potential habitats in Florida formatted for queries by focal species; identifies focal species that may inhabit selected pixel(s). Potential habitat includes areas that have been occupied by the species and areas where occupancy is unknown based on available occurrence records. In 1994, researchers in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission completed a project, entitled Closing The Gaps in Florida's Wildlife Habitat Conservation System...

Recent interest has increased related to developing alternative sources of renewable energy to reduce dependence on oil. Some of those sources will include power generation infrastructure and support activities located within continental shelf waters, and potentially within deeper waters off the U.S. Pacific coast and beyond state waters (i.e., outside three nautical miles). Currently, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is considering renewable energy proposals off the coast of Oregon. The 2011-2012 Pacific Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment (PaCSEA) project is intended to provide new information on species composition, distribution, abundance, seasonal variation, and habitat utilization among...

Climate change predictions include warming and drying trends, which are expected to be particularly pronounced in the southwestern United States. In this region, grassland dynamics are tightly linked to available moisture, yet it has proven difficult to resolve what aspects of climate drive vegetation change. Here, we combine climate and soil properties with a mechanistic soil water model to explain temporal fluctuations in perennial grass cover, quantify where and the degree to which incorporating soil water dynamics enhances our ability to understand temporal patterns, and explore the potential consequences of climate change by assessing future trajectories of important climate and soil water variables. Our analyses...
This map shows water features where aquatic biodiversity is likely to be important. It shows buffered streams, wetlands, and deepwater habitats that fall within protected areas or TNC portfolio areas.
This map shows the potential current distribution of mule deer, in the context of current and near-term terrestrial intactness and long-term potential for climate change and energy development.

Improved Gulf Hypoxia Planning Tool: Landscape scale planning tools focus conservation priorities through a series of region-specific lenses. These tools include: CHAT; SECAS; Gulf Hypoxia Initiative - Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5; and landscape designs developed by the Great Plains LCC and Gulf Coast Prairie LCC. Discussions with industry, agency and organizational leaders across the mid-continent suggest that the time is ripe for opening a dialogue about how to bridge the planning between the west and east to find the appropriate stakeholder-driven set of mid-continent connections for a network of lands and waters. The recipient will assist staff from multiple LCCs and other interested entities in setting...

This map shows current and near-term terrestrial intactness, as well as long term potential for development and climate change. These datasets are the results of a series of fuzzy logic models that integrate many landscape factors, including urban, agriculture, roads, invasive vegetation, and fire regime.

This map presents limiting factors for Greater Sage-grouse for an area in the northern part of the ecoregion. This was used for the sage-grouse insert in the final report.

This dataset is one of a dozen or so datasets that provide the basis for a vulnerability assessment of the Great Northern LCC that examines land use and climate changes at landscape scales, for the full LCC boundary. It is an exposure variable that represents the physiographic diversity of landforms and parent material that is unitless, and then normalized, run from 0 to 1.

This dataset is one of a dozen or so datasets that provide the basis for a vulnerability assessment of the Great Northern LCC that examines land use and climate changes at landscape scales, for the full LCC boundary. It represents terrestrially-defined adaptive capacity, where values run from 0 to 1.0 and is calculated as the complement of the degree of human modification (1-H). The original floating point values ranging from 0-1.0 were multiplied by 100 and converted to integer format for this dataset.

Emerging applications of ecosystem resilience and resistance concepts in sagebrush ecosystems allow managers to better predict and mitigate impacts of wildfire and invasive annual grasses. Soil temperature and moisture strongly influence the kind and amount of vegetation, and consequently, are closely tied to sagebrush ecosystem resilience and resistance (Chambers et al. 2014). Soil taxonomic temperature and moisture regimes can be used as indicators of resilience and resistance at landscape scales to depict environmental gradients in sagebrush ecosystems that range from cold/cool-moist sites to warm-dry sites. We aggregated soil survey spatial and tabular data to facilitate broad-scale analyses of resilience and...

Conclusions: In response to logging, songbirds demonstrated “habitat compensation” by moving into different adjacent habitats across a fragmented landscape. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: This study investigates the degree to which species respond differently to logging across different scales in Alberta’s boreal mixed-wood forests. Researchers tracked changes in the composition and abundance of songbirds at the patch-level and landscape level, finding significant variation between the two spatial scales. The results suggest that predictions of organism response based on the island biogeographic model are limited, and that—while responses varied across species—songbirds demonstrated “habitat compensation” by moving...

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) is undergoing a Management Plan amendment that will integrate livestock grazing and rangeland management with the management of GSENM objects and resources. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is applying a broad scale approach to this planning process by analyzing regional trends observed for the Colorado Plateau (COP) Rapid Ecoregional Assessment (REA) in relation to their distribution and status in GSENM. This Story Map looks at the following regional trend topics: Current Terrestrial Intactness, Habitat Connectivity, Road Density, and Sensitive Soils.

The USDA, NASS Cropland Data Layer (CDL) is a raster, geo-referenced, crop-specific land cover data layer. The 2015 CDL has a ground resolution of 30 meters. The CDL is produced using satellite imagery from the Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS sensor and the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC) DEIMOS-1 and UK2 sensors collected during the current growing season.
