This collection contains hand samples gathered by IGWS field teams under the direction of State Geologist Charles Deiss (1945-1959) between 1947-1957 in support of research projects resulting in multiple Survey publications. The collection is organized by geologic age and contains materials from the Ordovician through Pennsylvanian periods.

The Historic Materials collection consists of items that were used in field research in the past. This includes, but is not limited to, mapping tools, protective equipment, and geolocation trackers.
Shapefiles showing the extent of the Dugger, Minshall-Buffaloville, Seelyville, and Springfield Coal Members derived from coal-test records, mine-map notation, and interpretations of geophysical logs. Information was included in the USGS National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS).
The Education Collection contains more than 2,200 authentic rock, mineral, and fossil specimens for non-professional study and hands-on exploration. We encourage people of all ages to explore and discover the natural sciences through real, tangible experiences with these objects.
The Bedrock Core Information System interactive map illustrates important reference information about 1,155 cores in the IGWS bedrock core archive at a glance, including the spatial location, IGWS reference number, total depth below the land surface captured by the core, top bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the top of that unit, and bottom bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the bottom of that unit.
