Interactions between geomorphic processes at multiple scales shape the distributions of habitats, species, and life stages that a river can support. Understanding these hierarchical processes may be helpful for proactive monitoring and restoration of native Western Brook Lamprey (Lampetra richardsoni) and Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) in Pacific Northwest rivers. The processes creating thick, fine-grained sediment deposits that lamprey larvae rely on as rearing habitat were assessed in part through field sampling in the Umpqua River basin, southwestern Oregon, USA. Local factors, such as substrate, boulders, wood, and water, that control sediment erosion and deposition, affecting larval lamprey habitat,...

This dataset includes georeferenced, high-resolution, airborne thermal infrared (TIR) and high-resolution true-color imagery, a polyline shapefile of the channel centerline, a polyline shapefile with TIR sample points for longitudinal stream temperature profiles, and a tabular file with longitudinal stream temperature profiles for the Donner und Blitzen River and its tributaries, Oregon. The aerial TIR surveys were conducted with a helicopter by NV5 Geospatial and are published as 17 raster mosaics in GeoTiff format with a resolution of 0.3 meters (m). The TIR mosaics contain corrected surface temperatures in degrees Celsius (C) (multiplied by 10 to create an unsigned integer pixel type). The longitudinal stream...

This data release includes metrics from the Regional Stream Quality Assessment (RSQA) from the Southeast Region for habitat stressors related to water-quality and habitat substrate. The goals of RSQA are to characterize multiple water-quality factors that are stressors to aquatic life ‐ contaminants, nutrients, sediment, and streamflow alteration – and to develop a better understanding of the relation of these stressors to ecological conditions in streams throughout the region. In order to characterize water-quality variables and stream-habitat measurements as an aggregation of multiple measurements over a sampling period, and in support of ecological stressor modelling, metrics (summary statistics or indices) were...

The Columbia Slough is located south and parallel to the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon and consists of approximately 19 miles of predominantly urbanized waterway that drains approximately 32,700 acres of land with industrial, commercial, residential, and agricultural uses. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting, and soil and groundwater contamination by PFASs has been detected at Portland International Airport (PDX) and the adjacent Portland Air National Guard base (PANG). PFASs have also been detected in sediments from Columbia Slough, which receives stormwater runoff from both PDX and PANG. Fish tissue samples were collected from the...

The Siletz River Basin encompasses 970 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the Pacific Ocean. In cooperation with the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon (CTSI), the U.S. Geological Survey is evaluating how streamflow and bedload sediment conditions may influence mainstem spawning habitats for spring Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytschya) and Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus). This study encompasses approximately 105 kilometers of the Siletz River, including bedrock and alluvial reaches, between Elk Creek and the Pacific Ocean. More detailed evaluation for this study focuses on a 18.8-kilometer segment of the Siletz River between Wildcat Creek near Moonshine County Park...

The Willamette River Basin, Oregon, supports native fish species and non-native fish species introduced for sport fisheries or accidentally from aquarium releases and other sources. Based on fish surveys completed from 1998 to 2018 by Oregon State University and records from the Oregon State University Ichthyology Collection, the Willamette River Basin has 34 native fish species found upstream of the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers and 28 non-native fish species. Each native and non-native fish species has its own thermal tolerances and diet, spawning, and vertical preference traits. This means that distributions of native and non-native fishes along the river network are shaped by physical factors...

Ultra-low volumes of naled are applied by aircraft over rice fields and canals to reduce adult mosquito populations near Sacramento, California. Each summer, the pesticide is applied approximately 7-10 times between July and October. Naled and its major degradate (dichlorvos) were quantified in water, biofilm, and invertebrates following aerial applications. In 2020, samples were collected before the naled application season, after 3 rice field and 5 canal applications, and immediately after an application. In 2021, water and crayfish samples were collected before the naled application season, after 3 applications, and at intervals (1, 3, 5, and 7 days) following an application. A few opportunistic samples (including...
