Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the American River at Sailor Bar, near Fair Oaks, California, October 19-21, 2020, to support research on remote sensing of water depth from satellite images. This data release is a field-verified inventory of postfire hydrologic response for the 2020 CZU (San Mateo–Santa Cruz Unit) Lightning Complex, River Fire, Camel Fire, and Dolan Fire following a 26-29 January 2021 atmospheric river storm sequence. Postfire hydrologic response types include a) no response, b) minor response, and c) major response. The Middle Fork Willamette River Basin encompasses 3,548 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the mainstem Willamette River. This data release contains data summarizing observations within and adjacent to the Woodbury Fire, which burned from 8 June to 15 July 2019. In particular, this monitoring data was focused on debris flows in burned and unburned areas. Rainfall data (1_Woodbury_Rainfall.zip) are contained in comma-separated value (CSV) files named “Wdby_Rainfall” appended with the names of 3 rain gages: B2, B6, and Reavis. We performed hourly monitoring of precipitation and soil moisture at the Two Towers landslide located in northern California near the town of Zenia. Data were acquired January 19, 2017 to April 29, 2020. Rainfall was measured near the center of the landslide using a tipping-bucket rain gauge with resolution of 0.254 mm and accuracy of ±2% to 250 mm/h (resolutions and accuracies stated herein are as specified by sensor manufacturers and accounting for datalogger resolution). To support the modeling of storm-induced flooding, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project has created an integrated 1-meter topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) for the Strait of Juan de Fuca, which is located at the outlet of the Salish Sea. The international boundary between Canada and the northwestern part of the United States bisects the strait. This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Bluefield 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in West Virginia and Virginia. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2020 and 2022. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. Monroe County in southeastern West Virginia hosts world-class karst within carbonate units of Mississippian and Ordovician age. Lidar-derived elevation data acquired in late December of 2016 were used to create a 3-meter resolution working digital elevation model (DEM), from which surface depressions were identified using a semi-automated workflow in ArcGIS®. Observations of widespread liquefaction and stratigraphic and structural relationships in a trench across an ambiguous scarp are used to constrain the timing of Holocene earthquakes on the northwest-striking Wallula fault zone in southeast Washington and Oregon. A continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) survey was conducted in a 1.2-mile reach of the Similkameen River upstream of Enloe Dam in December 2021 in Washington State. The survey was performed to characterize the resistivity of the water column and subbottom materials using the CRP method. The survey consisted of eight longitudinal profiles roughly equivalent in length and conducted in the right, left and center of the channel. Boat-mounted acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were used to collect velocity data on the Columbia River in a small area near Northport, WA. Velocity surveys were collected during two surveys at high-flow, high-stage conditions in May 2018. Bathymetric data were also collected during one of the surveys using a single-beam echo-sounder. The datasets here provide 1) raw ADCP and single-beam survey data, 2) processed summaries of the data, primarily in geospatial data formats, and 3) summary visualizations of transect-averaged velocity and depth characteristics of the surveyed reach.
This report summarizes the age-dating results from four terrace surfaces of the Littlerock Creek (map units T3g, T3c, T2, and T1c) that record cumulative strike-slip displacements ranging from 470 to 1080 meters along the Mojave section of the San Andreas Fault. Within this report are detailed the methodology used to collect samples of rock and sediment, determine concentrations of cosmogenic beryllium-10 in purified quartz isolated from the samples, and use those nuclide concentrations to calculate surface exposure ages. The lateral blast, debris avalanche, and lahars of the May 18th, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. Lava domes were extruded during the subsequent eruptive periods of 1980-1986 and 2004-2008. Nearly four decades after the emplacement of the 1980 debris avalanche, high sediment production persists in the North Fork Toutle River basin, which drains the northern flank of the volcano. This high sediment production poses a risk of flooding to downstream communities along the Toutle and Cowlitz Rivers and of clogging the shipping channel of the Columbia River. This data release contains foreshore slopes for primarily open-ocean sandy beaches along the west coast of the United States (California, Oregon and Washington). The slopes were calculated while extracting shoreline position from lidar point cloud data collected between 2002 and 2011. The shoreline positions have been previously published, but the slopes have not. A reference baseline was defined and then evenly-spaced cross-shore beach transects were created. Then all data points within 1 meter of each transect were associated with each transect. Deep Springs Valley (DSV) is a hydrologically isolated valley between the White (north and west) and Inyo (south and east) Mountains that is commonly excluded from regional paleohydrologic and paleoclimate studies. Previous studies showed that uplift of Deep Springs ridge (informal name) by the Deep Springs fault defeated streams crossing DSV and hydrologically isolating the valley sometime after eruption of the Bishop Tuff.
