The Willamette Valley Project (WVP) is a system of revetments, fish hatcheries, and 13 dams in the Willamette Basin of northwestern Oregon that is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood risk management, irrigation, power generation, water quality improvement, and recreational opportunities, among other authorized purposes. By reducing available habitat and altering the natural hydrologic and thermal regimes in the Willamette Basin, the WVP has negatively influenced native populations of anadromous fish, including spring-run Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and winter-run steelhead (O. mykiss), which were designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Public Law...

These data are solubility calculations for dissolved gases in groundwater samples collected to support a U.S. Geological Survey study to estimate the timing and source of recharge to the basalt groundwater system in the Umatilla River basin, Oregon. The software package Dissolved Gas Modeling and Environmental Tracer Analysis (DGEMTA; Jurgens and others, 2020) was used to develop the solubility calculations. DGMETA produces estimates of dissolved gas concentrations during recharge as well as estimates of recharge temperature, excess air, and excess nitrogen gas concentrations by optimizing the solutions of solubility equations for multiple gases dissolved in samples of groundwater. These data were collected during...

This data release contains the model input and output data, and supporting files, from hydrologic simulations of streamflow conditions in the upper Klamath River Basin using the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS). The model was calibrated for the portion of the basin draining into Upper Klamath Lake. It simulates daily streamflow, snow, solar radiation, evapotranspiration, surface-water, and groundwater processes within the basin. The model calibration period spanned water years 2000 through 2015, and the model validation period spanned water years 1984 through 1999. The model was calibrated and validated using measured streamflow, snowpack, evapotranspiration, and solar radiation data sets.

The Middle Fork Willamette River Basin encompasses 3,548 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the mainstem Willamette River. Fall Creek Basin encompasses 653 square kilometers and drains to the Middle Fork Willamette River. In cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey evaluated geomorphic responses of downstream river corridors to annual drawdowns to streambed at Fall Creek Lake. This study of geomorphic change is focused on the major alluvial channel segments downstream of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams including the lowermost 11.5 km of Fall Creek and 27.3 km of the Middle Fork Willamette River, as well as Fall Creek Lake. GIS layers defining the landforms,...

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model, MODFLOW 6, was developed to provide a better understanding of the hydrogeology of the Harney Basin, southeastern Oregon. The model was used to investigate the historical groundwater-level decline and storage loss associated with anthropogenic groundwater demands. The model was calibrated to 1930 through 2018 conditions. This USGS data release contains all of the input and output files for the simulation described in the associated model documentation report (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20241518)
The USGS has published United States water-use data every five years since 1950. To increase the temporal and spatial availability of water use estimates using nationally consistent methods, the USGS is developing national water-use models for each major water-use category. This data release publishes crop irrigation withdrawals for the conterminous United States (CONUS) that are calculated using modeled irrigation consumptive use (Martin and others, 2023), irrigation efficiencies, and source-water proportions (Dieter and others, 2018). Crop irrigation withdrawals and irrigation consumptive use refer to water removed and consumed, respectively, from a groundwater or surface-water source to produce agricultural crops....

In the Willamette River Basin in northwestern Oregon, stream temperature has been altered by 13 dams operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), negatively influencing threatened populations of native salmonids. CE-QUAL-W2, a two-dimensional, hydrodynamic water quality model, has been used to investigate temperature and heat patterns in the Willamette River and the downstream effects of dam operations and other anthropogenic effects on heat and stream temperature. This data release includes the input and output files for six CE-QUAL-W2 models that include Fall Creek downstream of Fall Creek Dam, the Row River downstream of Dorena Dam, the Coast Fork Willamette River downstream of Cottage Grove Dam, the...

This data release presents tabular data used and analytical water-level modeling files generated as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study, done in cooperation with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, to evaluate water-level change from a multiple-well aquifer test in well 422 on the Umatilla Indian Reservation near Mission, Oregon. Water-level, pumping, and barometric-pressure data collected during February 1, 2016–April 18, 2016 were used within the accompanying water-level modeling files to estimate drawdown in observation and background wells from the aquifer test. Water-level models were created within Excel spreadsheets using an Excel Add-in called SeriesSEE (Halford and others, 2012)....
Malheur Lake is a vast, shallow lake in eastern Oregon. The lake is within the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and serves as an important stop and breeding ground along the Pacific flyway for migratory ducks and geese. The bottom of the lake is fairly uniform and there are very few topographic features. A small vertical increase in lake stage may result in a large change in area or volume. The dataset includes a Microsoft Excel workbook, a comma-separated values file, a shapefile, and metadata. The Microsoft Excel workbook has two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet contains the final stage/volume/area table for the area of interest in Malheur Lake. This first spreadsheet is also included in the data release...

A hydrodynamic, water-temperature, and water-quality model (CE-QUAL-W2; Wells, 2020) of the Link-Keno reach of the Klamath River (Oregon) was used for calendar years 2006–15 to run a series of base and recirculation scenarios. These model runs were implemented to test alternative scenarios for routing some of the Klamath Straits Drain discharge into Ady Canal. The model scenarios were configured for baseline conditions and three different sets of recirculation scenarios, including the maximum year-round recirculation without discharge limits (scenario 1), limited year-round recirculation fixed by the current pipe flow configuration from Klamath Straits Drain into Ady Canal (scenario 2), and limited seasonal recirculation...
