Wildlife species face threats from climate and land use change, which may exacerbate how extreme climatic events influence population persistence and biodiversity. Migratory waterbirds are especially vulnerable to hydrological drought via reduced availability of surface water habitats. We assessed how whooping cranes, an endangered species in the U.S. and Canada, modified habitat use and migration strategies during drought to understand this species’ resilience to changing conditions and adaptive capacity. The data included 8,555 night-roost sites used by 145 cranes, 2010–2022, under non-drought conditions, moderate drought, and extreme drought conditions.

This data release contains three data sets. The data were collected in 1996 at the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND, USA. The main data set comprises the list of plant species observed and includes the transect, plot number, plot size, and vegetation type where each species was found. A second data set has the locations of the transects, along with their IDs which can be linked to the species list. The final data set is a list of nomenclature updates and species that had duplicates in ITIS, along with the currently accepted scientific names of these species.

This database contains records of grassland bird abundance and vegetation structure on tallgrass and mixed-grass prairies managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Specifically, under the adaptive-management decision framework (Native Prairie Adaptive Management [NPAM] intiative), we surveyed breeding birds and sampled vegetation on 89 native prairie NPAM units managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, including 55 units in 2011, 87 units in 2012, and 87 units in 2013. The NPAM units occurred in 19 USFWS refuge complexes and wetland management districts, including 14 complexes in USFWS Region 6 (North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana) and five complexes in USFWS Region 3 (Minnesota).

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center observed bird flights at 7 study sites, twice weekly during two spring and two fall migration periods between April 3, 1981 and May 20, 1982. Study sites were located in south-central North Dakota in Barnes, Kidder, and Stutsman counties. The database includes flight observation's of bird species in the vicinity of power lines and transmission towers, number of birds in each flock, their reactions to power lines and transmission towers, weather conditions, and number of collisions.

Advances in both remote sensing and analytical tools for spatial data have allowed for the integration of dynamic processes into species distribution models. We studied the direct and indirect impacts of using fire and grazing to manage remnant prairies on adult monarch abundance. This dataset consists of data collected at 10 burned and 10 grazed remnant Minnesota prairies during the summers of 2016 and 2017. We measured Asclepias spp. (milkweeds, monarch host plants) frequency, forb frequency, and adult monarch butterfly abundance at sites owned and managed by the Minnesota DNR, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, and private landowners.
The Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center was formally established in 1965 in Jamestown, North Dakota. Over its 50-year history, its scientists have produced more than 1750 publications and reports, covering a wide range of science. The Yellowknife Study Area (YSA),Northwest Territories, Canada, was established in 1961 by H. W. Murdy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for the study of wetland and waterfowl ecology. The study area is located on the western edge of the Precambrian Shield and edge of the taiga and is recognized for its high wetland densities and waterfowl abundance. The region is underlain by discontinuous, warm permafrost and hence vulnerable to a warming climate. Location and associated data came from whooping cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2009–2018. We marked a sample of 68 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system (GPS) network and transmitted those data through the Argos satellite system. Cranes were captured either at their natal areas in and adjacent to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada or at their winter terminus along the Texas Gulf Coast. Plant and soil data were collected in experimental plots in two sites ("Terrace" and "Hilltop") at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, and one site ("BSV") at Badlands National Park, South Dakota. At each site, 70, 2.5 x 2.5 m plots were assigned randomly to nitrogen-alone or nitrogen+water addition treatments (or no treatment for the control). Treatments were applied and data collected 2010-2013. The dataset includes six tables: (1) experimental treatments by plot and year; (2) plant and soil metrics analyzed in the larger work; (3) plant tissue and soil total carbon and nitrogen raw data; (4) plant biomass raw data; (5) canopy and ground cover raw data; and (6) canopy and ground cover codes.

A study was conducted to assess the vertical accretion of sediment in the Mud Lake impoundment of Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located in Brown County, South Dakota. Sediment cores were collected from the Mud Lake impoundment during 2000 for determination of vertical accretion rates, which were estimated using cesium-137 and lead-210 isotopic dating techniques. These data directly support the associated publication “Sedimentation Rates in the Marshes of Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, South Dakota” which is referenced within the Metadata.

This dataset describes features of 2941 duck nests that were found in the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota during 2002-2003. Nest features include estimated initiation date, incubation stage and status as active. The dataset accompanies a scientific journal article describing an evaluation of the density and success of duck nests in conservation fields in 36 study areas that were seeded with native or tame grasses.
