Among the many recent developments explored in Canada's Changing North is the legal recognition of aboriginal rights by the Canadian state, which has led directly to significant increases in their political and economic power. It also examines how economic development, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, particularly minerals, has grown to an enormous scale. Development of arctic oil and gas, which hinges on world supplies and national and international politics, has meant major changes across the North. Purpose of the Management Plan The purpose of the Management Plan (MP) is to provide strategic direction for Liard River Corridor Park, Liard River Corridor Protected Area, and the adjacent Scatter River Old Growth Park in northern British Columbia, established in 1999. The MP provides background information on the protected area attributes, land use, tenure, interests, role in the protected area system, existing commitments and issues. It then specifies priority objectives and actions for management of the park. The effects of exchanging noncertified with certified wood-burning devices on the 24h-average PM2.5concentrations in the nonattainment area of Fairbanks, Alaska, in a cold season (October to March) were investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting model inline coupled with a chemistry package. Even changing out only 2930 uncertified woodstoves and 90 outdoor wood boilers reduced the 24 h-average PM2.5concentrations on average by 0.6 μg.m−3 (6%) and avoided seven out of 55 simulated exceedance days during this half-a-year. Concerns regarding the size and sex composition of Yukon River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha have been expressed in public meetings for over a decade. However, reports of small size and low numbers of females have become increasingly common in recent years, and apprehension over the long-term health of the stock has grown within the drainage. New field mapping of surficial deposits near the Castner Glacier, Alaska has identified three distinct moraine complexes beyond the current glacier margin, denoting at least three separate intervals of glacial advance or stillstand. The timing of moraine stabilization and ice retreat was determined by cosmogenic super( 10)Be surface exposure dating for the two older moraines along with lichenometric measurements for all three moraines. Surface exposure ages indicate the timing of ice retreat after the late Wisconsin maximum at 14.7 c 0.7 ka (n = 4, k-years before present), and identify the intermediate moraine as corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA) at 1627 c 32 years AD (n = 2). Through the lens of poststructural political ecology this thesis critically interrogates the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA), which was struck in 2010 between nine environmental non-governmental organizations, the Forest Products Association of Canada, and the 21 member companies. Drawing on of the work of Foucault, this thesis performs a discourse analysis, and explores why signatories excluded First Nations and government from the negotiations, how these decisions were normalized, and considers the effects that these developments have had on solidarity and democratic processes within Canadian boreal forest politics. We used the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area in northeast British Columbia, Canada as a case study to determine potential conflicts between future resource development and high-value habitats of large mammals in an undeveloped boreal landscape. More than 50 % of high-value habitats for caribou, moose, elk, wolves and grizzly bears were located in Special Resource Management Zones, where natural resource developments could occur.
