The satellite data consist of 9,253 estimated locations of 21 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) that were satellite-tagged in either east-central Idaho (Salmon, Idaho) or southwestern Idaho (Snake River National Conservation Area) and tracked between 1993 and 1997 via the Argos satellite system. The raw eagle tracking data provided by Argos were filtered one time using a version of the Douglas Argos-Filter Algorithm and converted into XLS spreadsheet form. This preservation project preserved the geospatial and satellite information from the XLS spreadsheet and released it in shapefile format (Satellite_Data.shp) and CSV format (Satellite_Data.csv). Each tagged bird in this dataset has a unique PTT number that is...

The article presents a study which examines the total number of nesting Rusty Blackbirds (Euphagus carolinus) in boreal wetland habitats in Anchorage and Tanana Flats in Alaska. The study uses double sampling, and statistical analyses to estimate the number of pairs of nesting Rusty Blackbirds in Anchorage and Tanana Flats in 2007 and 2008. The result shows that habitat selection has been easily detected in Anchorage than Tanana Flats.

Woodpeckers (family Picidae) show promise as indicators of avian diversity in forests because their populations can be reliably monitored, and their foraging and nesting activities can positively influence the abundance and richness of other forest birds. A correlation between woodpecker richness and richness of forest birds is known to exist at the landscape scale, but uncertainty remains whether this correlation occurs at the smaller stand-level spatial scales where forest management activities take place. We used data collected under a diverse range of forest types, harvest treatments, and forest health conditions during a long-term study of bird communities in interior British Columbia, Canada, to examine two...

Life history patterns and their associated tradeoffs influence population dynamics, as they determine how individuals allocate resources among competing demographic traits. Here we examined life history strategies in Common Goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula; hereafter goldeneye), a cavity-nesting sea duck, in the northern boreal forest of interior Alaska, USA. We used multistate capture-mark-recapture models to estimate adult survival, breeding probability, first-year survival, and recruitment probability using a long-term nest box study (1997-2010). We detected marked variation in adult survival, which varied from 0.74 ± 0.12 (SE) to 0.93 ± 0.06. In contrast, breeding probability remained relatively high and invariant...

A spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) epidemic in southcentral Alaska has caused extensive mortality to spruce trees and a change in forest stand structure. Because a change in forest vegetation can influence composition and abundance of forest birds, we attempted to assess the type and magnitude of change in bird populations within 2 forest stands on the Kenai Peninsula that were undergoing differing levels of spruce beetle infestation. In addition, we compared bird populations occupying a salvage-logged forest site with those in the other forest stands. During our survey period (1994 to 1998), species composition and abundance of land birds differed across the sampled forest stands. Avian species diversity...

Landscape features influence individual dispersal and as a result can affect both gene flow and genetic variation within and between populations. The landscape of British Columbia, Canada, is already highly heterogeneous because of natural ecological and geological transitions, but disturbance from human-mediated processes has further fragmented continuous habitat, particularly in the central plateau region. In this study, we evaluated the effects of landscape heterogeneity on the genetic structure of a common resident songbird, the black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus). Previous work revealed significant population structuring in British Columbia that could not be explained by physical barriers, so our...

Peregrine falcon nesting surveys were conducted along the Kuskokwim River between McGrath and Aniak from 2000 to 2004. These surveys were part of the peregrine recovery plan to monitor the birds for five years after they were removed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service List of Threatened and Endangered Species. The study determined the abundance and productivity of peregrines in cliff nesting habitats along the Kuskokwim River. The number of peregrines and young produced were compared with data from 1976 when populations were first accurately assessed. The results of this study and comparisons with earlier data suggest that the peregrine population was at or near its lowest level in 1976, then steadily...

Denali National Park and Preserve (Denali) contains one of the highest densities of nesting Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos ) in North America. Productivity of this migratory population varies both temporally and spatially. Regardless of prey abundance, more fledglings are consistently produced at some nesting territories than others. In many raptor studies, the areas where the most fledglings are produced are often considered the highest quality nesting territories; however, few studies have examined the relationship between productivity and survival of juvenile Golden Eagles. I studied the effects of landscape characteristics of nesting territories on the productivity and survival of Golden Eagle in Denali. I...
Recent variation in the reproductive output of Peregrine Falcons ( Falco peregrinus anatum ) breeding along the Yukon River has encouraged the examination of the environmental factors that influence the reproductive ecology of these birds. The objectives of this study were to examine how weather, territorial quality and prey selection by breeding Peregrine Falcons relate to productivity at nest sites. I also assessed territorial occupation frequency as a measure of habitat quality. A total of 52 territories were monitored along the Yukon River, and were surveyed 11 times from 1984-2004. The occupation frequency was highly correlated with measures of productivity at a nest and I therefore considered occupation frequency...

Migration and reproductive strategies in waterbirds are tightly linked, with timing of arrival and onset of nesting having important consequences for reproductive success. Whether migratory waterbirds are capital or income breeders is predicated by their spring migration schedule, how long they are on breeding areas before nesting, and how adapted they are to exploiting early spring foods at northern breeding areas. However, for most species, we know little about individual migration schedules, arrival times, and duration of residence on breeding areas before nesting. To document these relationships in a northern nesting goose, we radiotracked winter-marked Tule Greater White-fronted Geese (Anseralbifrons elgasi;...

The population estimate for greater (Aythya marila) and lesser (Aythya affinis) scaup (combined) has declined dramatically since the early 1980s to record lows in 1998. The 1998 estimate of 3.47 million scaup is far below the goal of 6.3 million set in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP), causing concern among biologists and hunters. We summarize issues of concern, hypotheses for factors contributing to the population decline, and research and management needs recommended by participants of the Scaup Workshop, held in September 1999. We believe that contaminants, lower female survival, and reduced recruitment due to changes in food resources or breeding-ground habitats are primary factors contributing...
