This data release pertains to a seepage investigation and dye tracing study conducted in the Big Creek watershed of Newton County, Arkansas. The seepage dataset includes geospatial files of discharge measurement points and zero-flow observations along with vector lines delineating losing and gaining stream reaches. The dye tracing dataset consists of geospatial files of monitoring sites, dye injection location, and dye flow paths. Hydrologic systems in karst environments have a high degree of interconnectivity between surface water and groundwater systems. Because of this interconnectivity, activities which occur on the surface in karst environments have a direct impact on the water quality and quantity of karst...

Information on the locations and characteristics of faults were collected while conducting fieldwork between 1996 and 2019 in support of geologic mapping in the Buffalo River watershed area of northern Arkansas. A total of 1274 entries on faults were recorded at 452 sites. The observations associated with faults include seven categories of increasing completeness of information.

This data release contains numerous shapefiles that describe baseline characterization of the physical attributes of the riverine ecosystems in two national parks – Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR), Missouri, and Buffalo National River (BNR), Arkansas. The individual metadata associated with each shapefile describe in detail the specific process steps, source inputs for the data, and the specific river the data characterizes.
The geographic information system (GIS) format spatial data set of vegetation for Buffalo National River (BUFF) was created for the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Inventory Program (VIP). The BUFF administrative boundary covers an area of nearly 38,000 ha. The map classification scheme used to create the vegetation data set is designed to represent local vegetation types at the finest level possible using the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS) Version 2. Physiognomic information was also recorded, including height (woody vegetation), canopy density, and coverage patterns. The vegetation data set was developed by interpreting aerial photographs collected in October of 2006 and extensive field...
Comma-separated values (.csv) files containing data related to a National-scale assessment of mercury bioaccumulation in the US National Parks using dragonfly larvae as biosentinels through a citizen science framework.
Multispectral satellite images from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired between August 6, 2021, and September 15, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the WorldView3 and Planet SkySat sensors. The original images were cropped to produce smaller subset images focused on each of the two primary study reaches. In addition, the WorldView3 images were geo-referenced and warped to improve alignment with field measurements. This data release includes a comma-delimited (*.csv) text file with a listing of the satellite images with columns: River, Reach, AcquisitionDate, Sensor, PixelSizeMeters, Projection,...

This data release includes field measurements and remotely sensed data from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas acquired in August and September of 2021 to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae from aerial photographs and satellite images. This landing page has links to child items where each type of data can be accessed: Field measurements of water depth and percent cover of benthic algae acquired August 24-25, 2021. This ground-based data set was used to calibrate spectrally based models for inferring water depths from passive optical image data, assess the accuracy of image-derived depth estimates, and train classifications of benthic algal coverage. Digital aerial photographs...

Results from a quantitative survey of mussel assemblages from 12 long-term monitoring sites over 153 river kilometers of the Buffalo National River 2019-2021.
This dataset accompanies publication 'Isotopic constraints on middle Pleistocene cave evolution, paleohydrologic flow, and environmental conditions from Fitton Cave speleothems, Buffalo National River, Arkansas', published as a contribution to USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2017-5023 associated with the 2017 USGS Karst Interest Group meeting in San Antonio, TX.

Digital aerial photographs of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired on August 24, 2021 to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service using the following key pieces of equipment: Quest Kodiak K100 aircraft, PhaseOne iXURS-1000 4-band (RGB and NIR) 100 mega-pixel medium format digital camera, SOMAG gyro-stabilized/vibration isolation sensor mounting, and POS AV510 GNSS/IMU navigational system. The original images were processed using photogrammetry software to generate orthophotos for the entire project area, delivered as GeoTIFF tiles. The tiles covering each of the two primary study reaches...

Field measurements of water depth and percent cover of benthic algae were acquired from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas August 24-25, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae from aerial photographs and satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the channel and measuring water depth with a stadia rod. Percent of algae cover on the streambed at each sample point was estimated visually to the nearest 10% on a scale from 0.0 to 1.0. The spatial location of each measurement was obtained using a Leica Zeno GG04 RTK GPS receiver. The map projection and datum for these data are UTM Zone 15 N and WGS84, respectively. This...

This data release contains tabular data (comma-separated-value files) of natural radiogenic isotopes of strontium, uranium, and thorium for samples of modern water, speleothems, associated with Fitton Cave, north central Arkansas, as well as rock that host the cave deposits. In addition, U-series ages (230Th/U dates and model 234U/238U dates) are calculated from those data for subsamples of speleothems. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon are reported for a subset of the stalagmite samples. Sample locations and descriptions as well as specific sub-sample imagery and narrative explanations are included as information supporting the analyses. Selected results are depicted as data plots in an accompanying Excel spreadsheet...

Karst environments present many challenges to agencies and engineers attempting to work in these landscapes, particularly towards building infrastructure. The interconnectivity of karst hydrologic systems means that activities occurring on the surface of a karst landscape can have an impact on water quality and quantity. Additionally, soil thickness in karst landscape is often highly variable due to the presence of solutionally-enlarged fractures, joints, and openings at the soil-bedrock interface. Therefore, when planning infrastructure in karst terrains it is critical to do a thorough assessment to ensure that planned activities will not negatively impact the sensitive environment. In October 2020 Electric Resistivity...
