Aleutian Islands Cultural Resources

The Aleutian archipelago is an area that is rich in cultural history. Information about cultural sites and artifacts exists in a variety of formats including peer-reviewed publications, agency reports, and other records. The purpose of this project is to: (1) develop GIS data layer(s) of cultural sites that can be used in vulnerability assessments; and (2) develop an annotated bibliography of literature about cultural resources that can help guide future management and research in the region.

A high spatial resolution storm surge model was developed for the YK Delta area to assess biological impacts of storm surges under current and future climates. Storm surges are expected to be more frequent and more severe in the YK Delta area due to climate change and sea level rise. This data represents a vegetation map for New River Gorge National River. It contains nonoverlapping polygons which represent vegetation classes, aquatic features, and cultural features. Vegetation types were classified based on statistical analysis of plot data collected on the ground from 1998 through 2005. Polygons were delineated based on interpretation of digital and hard copy aerial photography flown in 2003.

Storm Surge Impacts on Biological Resources in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta

The purpose of the research is to develop a storm surge model for the YK Delta area and to apply it to determine biological impacts of storm surges in the current and future climates. This research is needed as storm surges are expected to be more frequent and more severe in the YK Delta area due to climate change and sea level rise. The biological impacts in the YK Delta due to the changed storm surges could be extreme. With the model, we will study 10 storms over the 1980 – 2011 time period. Model output will be used to determine the recurrence interval for the individual storms. With the model output from individual storms, an inundation index (time-integral of water level during a storm) will be calculated....

Gauley River National Recreation Area Vegetation Mapping Project - Spatial Vegetation Data

This data represents a vegetation map for Gauley River National Recreation Area. It contains nonoverlapping polygons which represent vegetation classes, aquatic features, and cultural features. Vegetation types were classified based on statistical analysis of plot data collected on the ground from 1995 through 2009. Polygons were delineated based on interpretation of digital and hard copy aerial photography flown in 2003. This data set was created by clipping the GARIvegetation feature class by the boundary of Gauley River National Recreation Area. Multipart polygons created by the clip operation were converted to single part polygons. Hectares and acres were calculated for each polygon using XTools.
