Field measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity were used to characterize the streambed permeability for two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. Saturated hydraulic conductivity, denoted by K, was measured with a backpack permeameter and modified Mark VI groundwater standpipe using the constant head method of Terhune [1958]. For each reach, permeameter measurements were collected at ten sites spanning a single...

This data release contains code for computing the filtering properties of cyclical infiltration in a layered vadose zone in Central Valley, California. The code for computing the filtering is described in a manuscript that is under review at Vadose Zone Journal. The updated data contained in this data release are the code to compute the filtering properties of the vadose zone. This code was developed in 2018. The code uses existing data as inputs. The inputs are from a groundwater flow model for Central Valley, California, described by Faunt et al. (2009), and from a soil texture model described by Faunt et al. (2010). The inputs from Faunt et al. (2009) and Faunt et al. (2010) were released in those years and are...

The acoustic Doppler current meter (ADCP) used in this study outputs binary data files containing measurement scheme, location, time, velocity, backscatter, boat heading, depth, and other parameters. These data are provided here in the manufacturer's "classic ASCII" format, as described in READMEforADCP.txt file associated with this data release. We also collected water samples for suspended-sediment concentration, with co-located ADCP backscatter data. These data are provided in a separate file indicating date, time, and location of these observations. Data were collected at three locations in Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in California: Lindsey Slough; Mokelumne River; and Old River.

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW200-FMP1_1) of the Central Valley in California was developed to aid water managers in understanding how water moves through the aquifer system, to predict water-supply scenarios, and to address issues related to water competition. The USGS Groundwater Resources...

Surface water quality, water isotope, and phytoplankton enumeration data were collected to evaluate the impact of an Emergency Drought Barrier (EDB) in False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected on six days during 2022 and 2023 (June 7, June 21, July 27, August 9, October 12, November 30, 2022, and February 21, 2023). Sampling occurred in Franks Tract, Mildred Island, the San Joaquin River, and various sloughs and cuts connecting these water bodies. High-resolution boat-based mapping data and discrete water samples were collected and analyzed for: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (orthophosphate), total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus,...

This data release documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The data set includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll . Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions in August, September, and October 2018 that coincided with conditions prior to, during, and following a directed flow action or pulse of agricultural return water organized by the California Department of Water Resources and California Natural Resources Agency...

Hand-held hyperspectral spectroscopy data were collected in 2022 in Franks Tract, a flooded area located in the central Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California. The data were collected from a boat and co-located within pixels from the Ocean Land Color Imaging (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel-3A and 3-B satellites. Data from 16 sites within 7 OLCI pixels were collected on three days: July 14, August 3, and November 3, 2022. Radiance measurements from the water, sky, and a reflectance plaque were collected to enable calculation of water-leaving radiance (Mobley 1999, Ruddick et al. 2019). At the location of each spectroscopy site, discrete water samples were also collected and analyzed for chlorophyll a, dissolved...

Salmon spawning locations (redds) were mapped to characterize habitat use along two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley and thus support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. Salmon redds were mapped during the fall of 2016 at the Merced River Ranch and Robinson Reach field sites using real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS. The location of the center of each redd was surveyed in the UTM Zone 10/NAD83 coordinate system, with easting and northing coordinates recorded in units...
