This child item data set provides phytoplankton data collected from Owasco Lake, New York, on October 8, 2019. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume are reported. All data are reported as raw calculated values. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at twelve sampling locations on Owasco Lake.

Background The invasive diatom Didymosphenia geminata (didymo) has historically been a wide-spread, but rare, micro algae found in moderately flowing cold-water streams of North America, Europe, Asia, and (more recently) New Zealand. Demographic patterns of didymo have recently changed resulting in greater spatial coverage and temporal persistence (e.g. blooms) in streams worldwide. Didymo blooms can form dense “woven fabric” aggregate up to 20 cm think, that trap algae, macroinvertebrates, detritus and other debris. The recent discovery of didymo in parts of New York State, including the Upper Esopus Creek in 2009, is concerning because blooms can affect benthic habitat, river hydraulics, the structure and function...

This data release contains cyanotoxin, chlorophyll-a, and pheophytin-a concentration, cyanobacterial genetics, phytoplankton community composition, and multiparameter sonde data collected from 20 sites in five northeastern United States river basins (Penobscot (ME), Santuit (MA), York (VA-WV), Salem (NJ), and Peconic (NY)). Solid Phase Adsorption Toxin Tracking (SPATT) passive samplers were deployed at all sites between August 31 and September 2, 2020, and retrieved after 7 days. Discrete water samples were collected when SPATTs were deployed, and at 2 sites (USGS station IDs 01670257, 0167014792), samples were also collected when the SPATTs were recovered. Sonde data were collected when deploying and retrieving...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is collaborating with the New York Department of State (NYDOS) Office of Planning and Development to prepare a new Long Island South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) Coordinated Water Resources Monitoring Strategy (CWRMS). Since 2000, when the last CWRMS was published, numerous research projects and studies are demonstrating several new threats to the ecologic health and resilience of the SSER. Contemporary threats include: Eutrophic conditions brought on by high levels of nutrients from sewage treatment plant discharges, stormwater runoff, groundwater seepage, and atmospheric contributions; Increased occurrences of harmful algal blooms in the past 15 years; and, Growing concern...
