This part of the data release presents projected flooding extent polygon (flood masks) shapefiles based on wave-driven total water levels for Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. There are eight associated flood mask and flood depth shapefiles: one for each of four nearshore wave energy return periods (rp; 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-years), the pre-storm scenario (base) and the post-storm scenarios.
Reducing coral reef vulnerability to climate change requires that managers understand and support the natural resilience of coral reefs. We define coral reef resilience as: the capacity of a reef to resist and/or recover from disturbance given its probable exposure regime, and maintain provision of ecosystem goods and services. Spatial variation in exposure to disturbance and the resilience of reefs in the face of those disturbances will determine the fate of coral reefs within management jurisdictions. ![]() Number of stony coral species, by marine ecoregion. Stony coral range maps have been drawn by Veron (2000), who kindly made available to us range maps for 794 species. We laid these range maps over the ecoregions to derive a species total for each ecoregion. Note that these stony corals have a wider range than coral reefs. The large physical structures of coral reefs only develop where such corals survive in sufficient densities (and usually diversity) over the long time scales it takes for such structures to form. These data were derived by The Nature Conservancy, and were displayed in a map published in The Atlas of Global Conservation (Hoekstra et al., University of California Press, 2010). ![]() This dataset represents polygon coverage of sites included in the inventory of Marine Protected Areas in the Wider Caribbean developed under the Reefs at Risk Caribbean project. The availability of polygon is limited. The full inventory of MPAs for the Wider Caribbean can be found in the accompanying point dataset developed under the project. Points with no polygon coverage are not included in this dataset. This dataset does not represent the full inventory.

This data release provides flooding extent polygons (flood masks) and depth values (flood points) based on wave-driven total water levels for 22 locations within the States of Hawaii and Florida, the Territories of Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. For each of the 22 locations there are eight associated flood mask polygons and flood depth point files: one for each four nearshore wave energy return periods (rp; 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-years) and both with (wrf) and without (worf) the presence of coral reefs. We extracted coral reefs from version 7.0 of the global one-kilometer raster data set compiled by the UNEP-WCMC update of 2003 (for more information about the source data set, e-mail spatialanalysis@unep-wcmc.org), which is almost entirely identical to the data published in the World Atlas of Coral Reefs (Spalding et al. 2001). They represent a combination of line and polygon information converted to a one-kilometer grid to smooth data originally drawn at different scales. This data release provides flooding extent polygons based on wave-driven total water levels for the coral lined coast of Florida and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The wave and sea-level conditions were then propagated using the XBeach over 100-m spaced shore-normal transects modified to account for base and post-storm scenarios. In situ observations following hurricanes Irma and Maria were used to create classifications of impact level to reefs where 0 = no impact, 0 - 0.05 = minor impact, 0.05 - 0.15 = moderate impact, and 0.15 - 1.00 = major impact. This list was developed under the Reefs at Risk Caribbean project and relied on literature and other studies. Gathering information on MPAs across the region is very difficult and, as such, this list does not pertain to be exhaustive or complete. Additionally, as the dataset was developed for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of protection afforded coral reefs - there may be some selective bias towards those directly relevant to coral reefs (for example, no protected turtle nesting beaches are in the dataset). The CREST project involves a blend of process and monitoring activities relevant to understanding the resilience of shallow water reef environments. Current areas of research include the Dry Tortugas, Virgin Islands and Biscayne National Parks, and selected areas of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
