Land management practices often directly alter vegetation structure and composition, but the degree to which ecological processes such as herbivory interact with management to influence biodiversity is less well understood. We hypothesized that intensive forest management and large herbivores have compounding effects on early-seral plant communities and plantation establishment (i.e., tree survival and growth), and the degree of such effects is dependent on the intensity of management practices. We established 225 m2 wild ungulate (deer and elk) exclosures nested within a manipulated gradient of management intensity (no-spray Control, Light herbicide, Moderate herbicide and Intensive herbicide treatments), replicated...

This data set represents the 2010 white-tailed deer seasonal range boundaries for Wyoming. Seasonal range delineations depict lands that are important in each season for certain biological processes within a herd unit. Seasonal range boundaries are based on long-term observation data, specific research projects, and professional judgement. Ranges are digitized at a scale of 1:100,000 using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing, and are revised as needed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Current seasonal range definitions are based on a 1990 document drafted by the Wyoming Chapter of The Wildlife Society in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and federal land agencies.

The strength of top-down forces in terrestrial food webs is highly debated as there are few examples illustrating the role of largemammalian carnivores in structuring biotic and abiotic systems. Based on the results of this studywe hypothesize that an increase in human visitation within Zion Canyon of Zion National Park ultimately resulted in a catastrophic regime shift through pathways involving trophic cascades and abiotic environmental changes. Increases in human visitors in Zion Canyon apparently reduced cougar (Puma concolor) densities, which subsequently led to higher mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) densities, higher browsing intensities and reduced recruitment of riparian cottonwood trees (Populus fremontii),...

Chronic Wasting Disease distribution in the United States by state and county (ver. 2.0, April 2024)
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal, contagious, neuro-degenerative disease affecting multiple members of the Family Cervidae. First detected in 1967, the disease has, as of April 2024, been documented in free-ranging and/or captive cervid populations in 33 states, five Canadian provinces, the Republic of South Korea, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The data provided here contains information on the known, available, documented distribution of CWD in the United States that is current as of the publication date. The USGS National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) tracks changes to the known distribution of CWD in the form of a map (available on the NWHC website at https://www.usgs.gov/centers/nwhc/science/expanding-distribution-chronic-wasting-disease....

NOTE: This layer is a subset of the corresponding seasonal range layer for this species. All of the same metadata is used for this subset. The citation title is modified to replace "Seasonal" with "Crucial" and only the following seasonal ranges are included: anything with a "crucial" (CRU) designation in the RANGE attribute field (Select By Attributes... > "RANGE" LIKE '%CRU%'). Project Synopsis: This 2-year project will replace 4 strand barbed wire fence with 3 or 4 pole buck rail fence or 3 strand barbed wire with a top wooden rail at critical sections of the boundary of Fossil Butte National Monument (FOBU) (8,198 acres). FOBU's current fence is constructed using 4 strands of barbed and barbless wire on steel t-posts. A good share of it does not meet the standards recommended for wildlife friendly fence. This project would correct this deficiency in many of the critical areas where wildlife cross the monument boundary. Fossil Butte is within Wyoming's core sagegrouse area, contains winter range for elk and summer range for pronghorn and mule deer. No grazing is permitted within...
