North wall of Gunnison Canyon at Bowie, the base of the slope consists of Mancos shale, above which is the Rollins sandstone member of the Mesaverde formation; the Bowie shale member of the same formation; (the type locality) in which the King mine is located, the Paonia shale member of the Mesaverde formation, and the upper or undifferentiated part of the Mesaverde.
