The Candy Lane 1 (CL-1) core was acquired in November 2005 as part of a multidisciplinary effort by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation to investigate the Mancos Shale in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, Montrose County, Colorado. The Upper Cretaceous Mancos core was taken from the NE 1/4 sec. 8, T. 50 N., R. 9 W. corresponding to approximately lat 38.61717° N., long 107.90174° W. The CL-1 core contains part of the lower portion of the Mancos Shale Formation; Mancos Formation members in ascending order include the Bridge Creek Limestone (partial), Fairport, Blue Hill, Juana Lopez, Montezuma Valley, and Niobrara (partial). After coring was completed,...

This data release contains one shapefile describing cattle access to a total of 36 different sub basins within the Shenandoah Watershed located in Virginia and West Virginia. This data release identifies areas in satellite imagery where cattle were observed to have access to the stream (confirmed access), areas where cattle exist, and are not fenced off from the stream (unrestricted access), and areas where cattle do not have access to the stream (restricted access) at the time of imagery capture. Streams were defined using a combination of geospatial data and visually assessing channel morphology in aerial imagery. Cattle access points were determined by visually assessing satellite imagery for barren or disturbed...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected rock physical property measurements to help understand causative sources of gravity and magnetic survey anomalies in the Iron Mountain-Menominee region, Michigan-Wisconsin. A total of 2,356 measurements of magnetic susceptibility and density from 152 locations have been conducted on Precambrian rocks. The measurements aid in interpretation of newly acquired ground-based gravity and airborne magnetic data that are helping to understand concealed Precambrian geology and potential mineral resources. Multiple measurements were made at each location and sample lithology units were derived from existing USGS geologic maps noted in the supplemental information section of the...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides salinity and density data collected at Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah monitoring locations during 2021–2022. Temperature, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen were collected using an In-Situ AquaTROLL 600. Sample density was measured using an Anton Paar DMA 35Ex at 5° increments between 5° and 40° C. Practical salinity was measured at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science using a Guideline Salinometer. These data were used to validate the equation of state for Great Salt Lake at salinities higher than the established range, 23–182 g/L (Naftz, et al, 2011). Data supports increasing the upper density range from 1.145...

This dataset contains the density of historic fire occurrences (points) within 1 km reporting units in the Landscape Assessment study area. This is an intermediate result of a geoprocesing model to characterize the historic distribution of wildfire in the study area. Density of historic fire occurrences was calculated by taking the count of all historic fire points within each 1 km polygon. The attribute Fire_Count represents the total number of fire occurrences in the 1 km reporting unit; the attribute fire_pt_fz represents the density fuzzy value (based on count), which was used to symbolize the feature's layer file.

Water-quality constituents were measured along planned survey lines, which were generally perpendicular to the shoreline and spaced 100 meters apart, over an approximately 2.3-mile section of nearshore Lake Erie on June 10-12, 2019 (survey 1), and August 19-21, 2019 (survey 2), with a YSI EcoMapper autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) using an undulating dive pattern (a 15-degree dive angle between the surface and 6 feet above the bottom). Water-quality data collected in this area included three-dimensional measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin (blue-green algae). The water-quality data were measured at 1-second intervals and were geo-referenced...

In the Atlantic Ocean and above the Miami Terrace off southeastern Florida, a total of nine CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) casts were performed using the 115-foot Research Vessel (R/V) Weatherbird II above the submerged Miami Terrace at the Miami pockmark and Key Biscayne pockmark from May 4 to May 8, 2016. A CTD is a package of electronic instruments and sampling devices that measure conductivity, temperature, and depth but also capable of measuring multiple chemical and physical parameters of the seawater column. A CTD cast measures the various seawater parameters while the package is lowered and raised in one or more cycles from onboard a ship as it drifts with an ocean current or steams along a predetermined...
Increases in population density often are associated with a change in mating system structure in numerous taxa. Typically, male interactions are minimal in extremely low density populations. As density increases, males exhibit territoriality but if density becomes too high, the energetic cost of defending a territory will eventually outweigh the reproductive benefits associated with territoriality. Consequently, males in high density populations may abandon territoriality and adopt dominance polygyny, lekking behavior, or scramble competition. We investigated the relationship between population density and mating system structure in three populations of the chuckwalla, Sauromalus obesus (= ater), near Phoenix, Arizona....

Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.

Data was collected to characterize the conditions under which sagebrush occurs after seeding and wildfire in the Great Basin, and used to parameterize models used to explore adaptive seeding approaches. Data includes plot level field data on sagebrush occurrence, density, weather, and soil moisture conditions in the year that seeding after wildfire occurred. Weather data includes both average annual summaries and average weather at 5-day intervals from day 1-250 of the year of seeding. Also included are summaries of annual temperature and soil moisture conditions from 1979 to 2016 and model predictions of the probability of sagebrush establishment in each of these years.
