These data were compiled for a study that investigated the effects of drought seasonality and plant community composition in a dryland ecosystem. In 2015 U.S. Geological Survey ecologists recorded vegetation and soil moisture data in 36 experimental plots which manipulated precipitation in two plant community types. The experiment consisted of three precipitation treatments: control (ambient precipitation), cool-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation November-April), and warm-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation May-October), applied in two plant communities (perennial grasses with or without a large shrub, Ephedra viridis) over a three-year period. These data are the primary data used to model rainbow trout growth in Glen Canyon. Fish growth data were collected from nighttime boat electrofishing field campaigns conducted five to six times per year in April, July, September, and January, from April 2012 through November 2021 for a total of 9798 observations of mark-recapture-based growth. Sampling was conducted in a five km reach in the lower portion of the Glen Canyon tailwater (3.7-8.9 km upstream of Lees Ferry, AZ). Two nights of sampling occurred on each trip, with the central 2-3 km of the reach sampled on both nights. The South Central U.S. is one of the main agricultural regions in North America: annual agricultural production is valued at more than $44 billion dollars. However, as climate conditions change, the region is experiencing more frequent and severe droughts, with significant impacts on agriculture and broader consequences for land management. This metadata record describes a series of datasets containing metrics used to characterize drought for four sets of United States Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages in the conterminous United States (CONUS) for three different time periods between 1921 and 2020 outlined below. The streamgages used are a subset based on the criteria used in Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow, version II (GAGESII, Falcone, 2011). Most of these data were collected in order to create a database of tree locations for use in calibrating remote sensing tools and products, particularly dead tree detection tools and canopy species maps. Data include tree locations, species identification, and status (live, dead, and, if dead, sometimes includes information on foliage and twig retention). They are a collection of different sampling efforts performed over several years, starting in a period of severe drought mortality. This dataset contains annual flow metrics quantifying drought and low streamflows for USGS GAGES-2 gages in the contiguous U.S. satisfying data completeness checks for the periods 1921-2020, 1951-2020, and 1981-2020. The dataset also contains annual climate variables from the USGS Monthly Water Balance Model (MWBM). The dataset provides trend analysis outputs for annual drought and low flow metrics for the periods 1921-2020, 1951-2020, and 1981-2020. Finally, we include six R language code files that were used to create the values included in this release as summarized in the process step section.

Streamflow and stream temperature in the Donner und Blitzen River Basin for water years 1980 through 2021 were simulated using the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) with the "stream_temp" module. The model domain was discretized into 175 stream segments and calibrated to observed streamflow and stream temperature at points distributed throughout the basin. These data are daily climate, water balance, and soil moisture data for 270 plots in the National Park Service (NPS) Southern Colorado Plateau Network (SCPN) Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) network. Climate data was collected from a gridded, daily climate dataset, Daymet (https://daymet.ornl.gov/). This data release documents time-series analyses of aqueous-chemistry data from public-supply wells (PSWs) and associated potential explanatory factors to characterize responses of groundwater quality to drought and recovery periods in California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during 2000-2022. Annual median nitrate values were computed for PSWs throughout the SJV during the period of study. These snag (dead tree) fall data were collected as part of long term forest dynamics data. Tree fall data were collected non-systematically as text comments until 2013, after which explicit snag fall data were collected on an annual basis. This particular dataset includes data from 23 plots in old-growth mixed conifer and montane conifer forests in Sequoia-Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. The plots range in size from 0.9 ha to 2.5 ha and were established from 1982 to 2001.
