This dataset was last updated 02/2017. This version includes a new tidal restrictions metric that assesses the effect of undersized culverts and bridges on tidal regime. The previous version (3.1) was updated on 05/2016 by incorporating a revised version of the land cover classification, DSLland Version 3.1, developed by UMass, which included the addition of The Nature Conservancy’s Northeast lakes and ponds classification. This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Ecological integrity is defined as the ability of an area (e.g., local site or landscape) to...
This dataset depicts the ecological integrity of locations (represented by 30 m grid cells) throughout the northeastern United States based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010 for aquatic systems. The values for this dataset were extracted from the Index of Ecological Integrity, Region-wide, Version 3.2 for all aquatic systems. Updated 09/2017. The metadata for the original dataset is as follows:This dataset was last updated 02/2017. This dataset was developed as part of the Designing Sustainble Landscapes project led by Professor Kevin McGarigal of UMass Amherst and sponsored by the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog); for more information about the entire project see: http://www.umass.edu/landeco/research/dsl/dsl.htmlThis dataset was last updated 02/2017. The revised version incorporates the addition of a simplified version of The Nature Conservancy's Northeast lakes and ponds classification, visit https://www.conservationgateway.org/ConservationByGeography/NorthAmerica/UnitedStates/edc/reportsdata/freshwater/Pages/Northeast-Lakes.aspx for more details. This dataset represents terrestrial...

Crustacean zooplankton were collected, enumerated, identified, and measured within the St. Clair-Detroit River System (SCDRS). Collections were made using a 0.5 m diameter 153 um zooplankton net. Nets were lowered to ~0.5 m from bottom depth and retrieved. Nets were utilized with a General Oceanics flowmeter to calculate the distance the net traveled. At sites of collection, both temperature (degrees C) and Secchi depth (m) were collected for abiotic influencing factors of the zooplankton community. Collected specimens were narcotized in sugar formalin. Specimens were enumerated, identified, and measured under a dissection microscope. Volumetric estimates (m^-3) were obtained by applying the distance traveled and...

We used NLCD 2011, SSURGO, and SEGAP data to map the density of desired resources for open pine ecosystems and six focal species of birds and 2 reptiles within the historic range of longleaf pine east of the Mississippi River. Binary rasters were created of sites with desired characteristics such as land form, hydrology, land use and land cover, soils, potential habitat for focal species, and putative source populations of focal species. Each raster was smoothed using a kernel density estimator. Rasters were combined and scaled to map priority locations for the management of each focal species. Species’ rasters were combined and scaled to provide maps of overall priority for birds and for birds and reptiles. For...

AbstractContext Conservation planning is increasingly using ‘‘coarse filters’’ based on the idea of conserving ‘‘nature’s stage’’. One such approach is based on ecosystems and the concept of ecological integrity, although myriad ways exist to measure ecological integrity. Objectives To describe our ecosystem-based index of ecological integrity (IEI) and its derivative index of ecological impact (ecoImpact), and illustrate their applications for conservation assessment and planning in the northeastern United States. Methods We characterized the biophysical setting of the landscape at the 30 m cell resolution using a parsimonious suite of settings variables. Based on these settings variables and mapped ecosystems, we...

The tabular dataset is a compilation of all historic observations of whooping crane locations up through 1941. Most of the records were obtained from Robert Porter Allen's 1952 report, "The Whooping Crane"; an additional 73 records were added from records found since 1952. Records include source (Allen 1952 [The Whooping Crane, Audubon]or other), location name, county, state or province, country (Canada, US, Mexico), estimated latitude and longitude, year, month, day, life stage (breeding, summering, wintering, migration, unknown), season (spring, summer, fall, winter), observer's name, and logical indicators of nesting, specimen taken, observer identified, or if captive bird. Completeness of each record is variable....
Arid ecosystems are often vulnerable to transformation to invasive-dominated states following fire, but data on persistence of these states are sparse. The grass/fire cycle is a feedback process between invasive annual grasses and fire frequency that often leads to the formation of alternative vegetation states dominated by the invasive grasses. However, other components of fire regimes, such as burn severity, also have the potential to produce long-term vegetation transformations. Our goal was to evaluate the influence of both fire frequency and burn severity on the transformation of woody-dominated communities to communities dominated by invasive grasses in major elevation zones of the Mojave Desert of western...

Identifying distributions of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) across the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) coastal landscape necessitates describing ecological processes in estuarine gradients. SAV assemblages are ecological indicators of aquatic ecosystem health; spatial and temporal distributions are strongly correlated to environmental conditions. Many wildlife species, including waterfowl, are dependent on SAV and seeds in NGOM coastal marshes for food and habitat. To understand SAV distributions at multiple spatial and temporal scales a multi-tiered project was designed to collect SAV presence, species assemblage, and cover data, and cores to describe seed food. The first tier sampled inter-annually in the growing...

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) provides many critical ecosystem services, yet we lack basic information on SAV assemblages, biomass and diversity across expansive coasts such as the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM). This research investigated SAV along the nGoM from 2013-2015 examining (1) inter-annual variation in SAV assemblages and biomass across salinity zones and gulf coast eco-regions (Texas Mid-Coast, Texas/LA Chenier Plain, Louisiana Delta, MS/AL), (2) intra-annual variation in SAV assemblages and biomass across salinity zones, (3) response of two species, Ruppia maritima and Myriophyllum spicatum, to salinity and light regimes, and (4) estimated organic carbon stock and storage of SAV habitat soils across...

These raster files showing wetland areas that were ponded during Rainwater Basin Wetland Complex Annual Habitat Survey. Annual Habitat Surveys (AHS) identify areas of wetland ponding and function (ponding and potential hydrophyte vegetation) during spring migration. The information is developed by Rainwater Basin Joint Venture to identifying how much habitat the Rainwater Basin Wetland Complex provides to migratory waterfowl on an annual basis. AHS have been completed for 2004 and 2006-2020 where high-resolution aerial photos of the Rainwater Basin Wetland Complex are classified using an image object classification software to determine land cover (hydrophyte water, agriculture water, hydrophytes, agriculture, or...
