Vegetation at ELMO was mapped and classified by a combination of existing plot data (Cully 2002), a field visit (August 2005) and photo interpretation of aerial photos from September of 2004. The protocols and standards used are those for small parks and are described in the NPS/BRD program documents (National Mapping Program Field Methods for Vegetation Mapping (1994a) for small parks (section 5.1). BOR was contracted by the Southern Colorado Plateau Network in 2005 to map approximately 2,400 acres (~ 1000 ha) of El Morro National Monument and environs.
