To address the data and information gap for characterizing coastal drought, a coastal salinity index (CSI) was developed using salinity data (Conrads 2016; Conrads and Darby, 2017). The CSI uses an approach similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a readily available drought index that is widely used for monitoring meteorological droughts (McKee and others, 1993). The CSI substitutes total monthly precipitation with monthly mean salinity data to determine the probability of recording a given salinity value in a particular month. The initial investigation demonstrated that the index could be used to delineate short- and long-term drought (saline) and wet (high freshwater inflow) conditions; however,...

The Biscayne and Southern Everglades Coastal Transport(BISECT) model combines a three-dimensional groundwater model with a two- dimensional hydrodynamic surface-water model with variable-density solute-transport. BISECT was constructed by combining two existing models, Tides and Inflows to the Mangrove Everglades (TIME) (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20075010), and Biscayne (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20125099), and modifying the Flow and Transport in a Linked Overland/Aquifer Density-Dependent System (FTLOADDS) simulator (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2005.04.015) to include spatially variations in the solar radiation reflected back into the atmosphere from the Earth’s surface (albedo) to improve model results....

Periphyton is a complex community of detritus, bacteria, fungi, and algae that grows attached to submerged substrates. Assemblage structure data for algae and cyanobacteria from periphyton samples were collected on a monthly basis from 2017 to 2021. Compiled data were reported as absolute abundance (cells) and biovolume per volume as well as absolute abundance (cells) and biovolume per area at four locations increasing in distance east of the L-67 canal in Water Conservation Area 3 (WCA 3) of the Florida Everglades immediately north of Everglades National Park. The periphyton assemblages were analyzed for five sample types including periphyton plates (Plates), invertebrate inclusion and exclusion plates (Inverts),...

The data in this data release includes results from the analysis of water and fish from 76 sites in the Everglades National Park (ENP). Water and particulate matter samples were collected from 2008 to 2018 and analyzed for total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg). Filtered water samples were also analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), and major anions. Fish samples (Eastern Mosquitofish, Flagfish, African Jewelfish, Golden Topminnow, and Mayan Cichlid species) were collected from 2007 to 2018 and analyzed for THg and MeHg and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. These data are important for analyzing hydrologic and geochemical controls on MeHg distribution and production...

The previously developed Biscayne and Southern Everglades Coastal Transport (BISECT) model, which combines a three-dimensional groundwater model with a two-dimensional hydrodynamic surface-water model with variable-density solute-transport (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195045), was used to evaluate the hydrologic response to historical and hypothesized modern hurricane strikes. Simulations were implemented using FTLOADDS (Flow and Transport in a Linked Overland/Aquifer Density-Dependent System) which is a coupled hydrodynamic surface-water and groundwater simulator that was developed by the U. S. Geological Survey to improve understanding of the complex and interconnected hydrology in South Florida. A simulation...

The study of Whiting Field Naval Air Station, Milton Florida requires numerical modeling of the groundwater system to determine the fate of contaminants released at the air station in previous decades. The MODFLOW-NWT modeling code (Niswonger and others, 2011) was applied for this purpose with field data defining a number of inputs including aquifer properties and timeseries. Lithologic logs were used to define aquifer material types and estimated hydraulic conductivities were redistributed based on these logs. Net recharge (precipitation minus evapotranspiration) is the primary flow input to the model and stream leakage is the primary flow output. The resulting model simulation has a grid spacing of 100 feet with...
