Abstract (from http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00028487.2016.1150879): Long-term sampling of fisheries data is an important source of information for making inferences about the temporal dynamics of populations that support ecologically and economically important fisheries. For example, time series of catch-per-effort data are often examined for the presence of long-term trends. However, it is also of interest to know whether certain sampled locations are exhibiting temporal patterns that deviate from the overall pattern exhibited across all sampled locations. Patterns at these “unusual” sites may be the result of site-specific abiotic (e.g., habitat) or biotic (e.g., the presence of an invasive species)...

The Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP), a major component of California's renewable energy planning efforts, will help provide effective protection and conservation of desert ecosystems while allowing for the appropriate development of renewable energy projects. The DRECP is focused on the desert regions and adjacent lands of seven California counties - Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego. It is being prepared through an unprecedented collaborative effort between the California Energy Commission, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also known as the Renewable Energy Action Team....

Conclusions: In fragmented watersheds, macrohabitat attributes measured at the patch scale were far more effective in predicting trout translocation success than measurements taken at the landscape scale Thresholds/Learnings: As a course filter indicator of cutthroat trout translocation success, the study found that translocations have a greater than 50% chance of fruitful establishment in watersheds >14.7km2 in area. Synopsis: This study aimed to identify stream-scale and basin-scale macrohabitat attributes limiting successful translocation and persistence of native cutthroat trout populations in fragmented landscapes along the Rio Grande. The study developed models of habitat attributes measured at two scales...

Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) have a life-history strategy specifically adapted to the extreme climate of the North. These fish migrate to spawning grounds just after breakup in the spring, then migrate to feeding sites in early summer, and finally in the fall migrate back to their overwintering sites. The Kuparuk River is a perennial stream originating in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range on the North Slope of Alaska. Sections of the Kuparuk are periodically intermittent in that, during low flows in the system, these channel reaches appear dry. The flow varies between surface and subsurface in this permafrost-dominated environment, with subsurface flow being limited to the unfrozen thaw bulb around...

Microsatellite DNA variation was examined in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations from throughout British Columbia, Canada, to address the roles of historical isolation, postglacial dispersal, and contemporary geomorphology in structuring genetic variation and differentiation. We detected signatures of historical isolation and postglacial recolonization in the form of 'interior' and 'coastal' population groupings, a decline in genetic variation as distance increased from putative glacial refugia, and different extents of isolation-by-distance in different regions. Rainbow trout populations were structured genetically into major regions and into smaller watersheds and then into drainages. Within drainages,...

he George River is a tributary of the Kuskokwim River, and produces chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, chum salmon O. keta, and coho salmon O. kisutch that contribute to intensive subsistence and commercial salmon fisheries downstream of its confluence. The George River weir is one of several projects operated in the Kuskokwim area that form an integrated geographic array of escapement monitoring projects. Collectively, and in accordance with the State of Alaska Sustainable Fishery Policy (5 AAC 39.222), this array of projects is a tool to assure appropriate geographic and temporal distribution of spawning salmon, and provide a means to assess trends in escapement that should be monitored and considered in...

Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna
The apparent lack of external differences between sexes, coupled with their unusual reproductive habits, make Burbot (Lota Iota Linnaeus 1758) a unique model for which to investigate life history and reproductive ecology traits. Burbot, a top level predator, are the only freshwater representative of the cod family (Gadidae). Despite being one of the most widely distributed freshwater fish species in the world, occurring throughout boreal and tundra ecosystems of the Northern Hemisphere, very little is known about their ecology. Theory suggests that life history traits develop as adaptive strategies for an organism to cope with environmental conditions. Reproduction is a key life history component, and requires tradeoffs...
