These data were compiled in order to represent long-term (multi-decadal) forest growth across eight different experimental forests in the United States, each with replicated levels of density treatments, as well as an important drought index correlated to growth. Forests around the world are experiencing severe droughts and elevated competitive intensity due to increased tree density. These data can be utilized to not only examine differences in within-stand competition, as well the trends and impact of drought in different forests across a broad climatic gradient, but also the influence of interactions between drought and competition on forest growth. Growth is measured as a treatment level, annual basal area increment...

Data on forest damage caused by insect and disease agents in the CYR study area was limited to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service annual forest damage aerial surveys. Data on insect distribution and ranges within the CYR study area was identified as a data gap. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) conducted annual forest damage aerial surveys using fixed-wing aircraft along predetermined routes across Alaska’s forests, with up to 25% of the total forested area of Alaska surveyed each year. Insect damage within one to two miles on either side of flight paths was recorded by drawing polygons onto 1:250,000 scale USGS topographic maps or a digital elevation model. Some damage...

A summary data set of all fire polygons we could locate as of December 2007 . We used multiple datasets to developed this layer including data gathered from the internet, publically available databases, and personal contacts with dozens of agency personnel throught the western U.S. Data were assessed for utility (but not accuracy) and formatted for consistency. Each source data set was then attributed consistently with fields for record number and year (of fire). Because various resource management entities map fires somewhat independently (especially in more recent years) we merged overlapping polygons for each year.. Users are encouraged to understand the contents of this data file before using it.

As part of Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is conducting a study to understand what environmental factors are contributing to the failure of floodplain forests to regenerate. This dataset uses lidar derivatives to identify broken forest canopy along the Mississippi River and Illinois River. A broken forest refers to an area that has a canopy height of greater than or equal to 10 meters. From this layer, forest canopy gaps can be identified by locating areas within the broken forest that have at least a 9.144 meter radius, or a 1-tree gap.

Forest harvest is one of the primary landscape-scale management actions affecting riparian forests of the Pacific Northwest, U.S, yet the effect of harvest on headwater steam amphibians is largely understudied. Existing information is often limited because of the difficulty separating movement and emigration processes from occupancy and abundance estimates. We designed a before-after control-impact experiment to account for instream movement in the responses of three unique headwater stream amphibians to clearcut logging as part of the Trask River Watershed Experimental Study in the Oregon Coast Range. We captured and marked larval tailed frogs (Ascaphus truei), Coastal giant salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus),...

Aboveground Biomass Data from Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. Plot data includes X and Y location, downed dead wood (DDW) count, mangrove species identification, and site descriptions. Species information was recorded for Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Sonneratia alba, Xylocarpus granatum, Lumnitzera littorea, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora lamarckii, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa and Ceriops tagal. Mangroves were inventoried for species identification, diameter at breast height (DBH), height, and dead status.
The dataset include raw pollen counts, age model data, and pollen accumulation rates with uncertainty estimates for seven lake sites in the Klamath Mountains, California, USA. The raw pollen counts reflect the relative abundance of major taxa from the vegetation surrounding each lake site (n=7) at 5 different time periods. The age model data provides a Bayesian-based estimate of the sediment's age and the associated uncertainty where pollen samples were also collected and counted (~1850, 1880, 1930, 1970, 2018 AD). Lastly, the pollen accumulation rates dataset encompasses the pollen accumulation rates for each taxa at each time step across all lakes plus the cumulative uncertainty with each calculation, as estimated...

Andrews Meadow in the Loch Vale watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park. Sample Collection: Englemann spruce (Picea engelmannii) living on slopes surrounding and at the edge of Andrews meadow (Latitude 40˚ 17’ 24” N, Longitude 105˚ 40’ 01” W NAD83). At the time of collection, the climate-sensitive upland P. engelmannii trees were growing on well-drained slopes above the meadow. Seventeen trees, two cores per tree when possible, were collected using a 5mm-diameter increment borer. During sample collection, diameter at breast height (DBH) was also measured. These cores were processed following standard dendrochronological methods. The annual (TW) and earlywood (EW) ring-widths of each core were measured to 0.001mm...

This dataset supports the following publication: "Solar and sensor geometry, not vegetation response, drive satellite NDVI phenology in widespread ecosystems of the western United States" (DOI:10.1016/j.rse.2020.112013). The data release allows users to replicate, test, or further explore results. The dataset consists of 4 separate items based on the analysis approach used in the original publication 1) the 'Phenocam' dataset uses images from a phenocam in a pinyon juniper ecosystem in Grand Canyon National Park to determine phenological patterns of multiple plant species. The 'Phenocam' dataset consists of scripts and tabular data developed while performing analyses and includes the final NDVI values for all areas...

Land management practices often directly alter vegetation structure and composition, but the degree to which ecological processes such as herbivory interact with management to influence biodiversity is less well understood. We hypothesized that intensive forest management and large herbivores have compounding effects on early-seral plant communities and plantation establishment (i.e., tree survival and growth), and the degree of such effects is dependent on the intensity of management practices. We established 225 m2 wild ungulate (deer and elk) exclosures nested within a manipulated gradient of management intensity (no-spray Control, Light herbicide, Moderate herbicide and Intensive herbicide treatments), replicated...

In the 1980s, most timber harvest was occurred only on the road system and the same pattern currently continues (Figure E-97; Sampson et al. 1988). Harvest in interior Alaska is limited by a 100–120 year rotation length cycle and access (Koontz 2013; E. Geisler pers. comm.). A 1998 study found that softwood lumber was the best opportunity for timber production in interior Alaska with white spruce (Picea glauca) most likely to meet local demand (Sampson et al. 1988). The Tanana Valley Forests are large expanses of land from Manley Hot Springs to the Canada border that are open to a variety of resource extraction activities including mining, gravel extraction, timber harvests, oil and gas leasing, and grazing (http://forestry.alaska.gov/stateforests.htm)....

This data represents areas of forest damage due to insect infestation, fire, flood, landslides, and windthrow. The information was collected, cooperatively by aerial surveys by both the USFS, Forest Health Protection (FHP) and ADNR, Div. of Forestry. Surveys are conducted primarily in July and August so that pest "signatures" may be identified during the optimal period for symptom development of ocular estimation. The aerial survey is coordinated such that the maximum extent of recent bark beetle damage (fading trees) and insect defoliation (discoloration, foliage loss) patterns may be determined. Surveys are flown in Southeast Alaska, Southcentral Alaska and Interior Alaska. The data represents a 10 year cumulative...

These data were compiled to help understand how climate change may impact dryland pinyon-juniper ecosystems in coming decades, and how resource management might be able to minimize those impacts. Objective(s) of our study were to model the demographic rates of PJ woodlands to estimate the areas that may decline in the future vs. those that will be stable. We quantified populations growth rates across broad geographic areas, and identified the relative roles of recruitment and mortality in driving potential future changes in population viability in 5 tree species that are major components of these dry forests. We used this demographic model to project pinyon-juniper population stability under future climate conditions,...
