As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Cores were continuous from land surface down to 240 feet below land surface and were drilled by consultants to EPA using sonic rotary–a fluidless drilling technique. The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, obtains all of its potable water supply from three groundwater basins (Irwin, Langford, and Bicycle Basins) within the NTC boundaries. In these basins, groundwater withdrawals exceed natural recharge, resulting in water-level declines. This database contains demographic and movement variables for 158 adult Agassiz's desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) translocated from the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, in the central Mojave Desert, California, in spring of 2008 and monitored through fall of 2018. The tortoises, fitted with radio transmitters, were translocated to plots south of Fort Irwin and followed monthly until fall of 2018, when transmittered were removed, and the project was ended. The database consists of unique identification numbers of the tortoises, sex and size, dates, details of locations, and status of the tortoises. The characteristics, discharge, and water quality of springs and seeps, at the Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC) were evaluated during 2015 and 2016. Geophysical, hydrological, and water-quality data were used to help characterize and document a baseline of current (2016) hydrologic conditions and water quality of springs and seeps located on the NTC. Hydrologic methods used in this study included discrete discharge measurements to evaluate surface flow from the springs, and temperature measurements to trace groundwater movement beneath the springs. This data release contains discharge measurements and temperature data at four springs: Garlic, Bitter, Jack Spring East, and Jack Spring West.

As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a newly drilled monitoring well site near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field.
