Environmental Analysis Data: These data were compiled to investigate the complex interactions between environmental gradients and geographic distance across the Intermountain West of the western United States. Due to complex topography, physiographic heterogeneity, and complicated relationships with large bodies of water, spatial autocorrelation of environmental similarity may be expected. We provide an R script (VarioAnalysis.R) that uses four associated data files (annualprecip.csv, annualSWA.csv, annualtemp.csv, key.csv) to reproduce Figure 3 in Massatti et al. 2020 (see Larger Work Citation). The data files contain information on yearly soil water availability, temperature, and precipitation, which are summed...

This data release presents data used for analyzing spatial and temporal differences in soil surface roughness within selected biocrust communities. These records were collected by ground-based lidar for 121, 1m x 3m soil plots with biological soil crusts (biocrusts). Roughness was estimated from 5 mm resolution data (CloudCompare v. 2.10.2, 2019) for two Great Basin Desert sites (UTTR-1; UTTR-2) in December 2015 and one Chihuahuan Desert site (JER) in February 2016. Data were again collected in June 2018 for UTTR-1 and UTTR-2. Additional field and laboratory data were included within this study to understand differences in soil surface roughness between UTTR and JER as well as between the 2016 and 2018 surveys at...

This dataset was created to assess the status of Lahontan cutthroat trout (*Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi*) habitat. Surveys were conducted within occupied Lahontan cutthroat trout habitat, as designated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Data represent reach-based surveys conducted in accordance with the Lahontan cutthroat trout habitat status assessment (LCTHSA) protocol (USGS). LCTHSA uses a probabalistic sampling design (i.e., Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified), standardized collection of habitat attributes, electronic data capture and management, and integration with remote sensing and geospatially-derived data products. Data were collected and managed by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish...

These datasets provide early estimates of 2022 fractional cover for exotic annual grass (EAG) species and one native perennial grass species on a bi-weekly basis from May to early July. The EAG estimates are developed within one week of the latest satellite observation used for that version. Each bi-weekly release contains four fractional cover maps along with their corresponding confidence maps for: 1) a group of 16 species of EAGs, 2) cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum); 3) medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae); and 4) Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda). These datasets were generated leveraging field observations from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) data plots; Harmonized Landsat...

This data set consists of 1:500,000-scale depth-to-water area polygons for the Humboldt River Basin, Nevada as published in the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Water Resources Bulletin 32 titled "Hydrologic reconnaissance of the Humboldt River basin, Nevada", 1966.

This USGS data release consists of three data sets used as the basis for estimates of groundwater discharge from evapotranspiration in Tule Valley and part of Sevier Valley, UT. The data sets are a mapped groundwater discharge area (GDA), a mean modified soil adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI), and evapotranspiration (ET) units derived from the MSAVI within the GDA. The GDA represents the area within each valley where discharge from evaporation by open water or bare soil and transpiration from phreatophytic plants exceeds the volume of water contributed by precipitation. The GDA was delineated during field reconnaissance of the study area using techniques similar to those used in previous studies throughout Nevada...

This data set represents evapotranspiration (ET) units based on a 2017-2018 summer mean modified soil adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI). The MSAVI information was used to partition Tule Valley and part of Sevier Valley, UT into six discharging ET units (playa; open water; very sparse desert shrub; sparse-to-dense desert shrub; grassland; and dense meadow and marshland), and scale estimates of groundwater evapotranspiration (ETg) to the basin level. ET units represent generalized groupings of vegetation and soil conditions. The units are constrained by a groundwater discharge area (GDA) which represents the area where discharge from evaporation by open water or bare soil and transpiration from phreatophytic plants...

This raster dataset represents groundwater-level change from 1996 to 2006 in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada, calculated using approach 1. For this approach, groundwater-level contours from 1995 and 2006 were interpolated into rasters and differenced to calculate groundwater-level change. Groundwater-level change was estimated using two methods (approach 1 and 2) to address groundwater-level measurement uncertainty and constrain groundwater-level change estimates.

This polygon represents the areal extent used to estimate groundwater-level and groundwater storage-volume change in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada. Each groundwater-level dataset used in this study (1970, 1995, 2006, 2020) contained a unique areal extent because the monitoring wells used to create each dataset was different and as a result, the extent of groundwater-level contours differed. Defining a common extent among all datasets was needed to evaluate water-level change and groundwater storage-volume change using a consistent approach.

The RCMAP (Rangeland Condition Monitoring Assessment and Projection) dataset quantifies the percent cover of rangeland components across the western U.S. using Landsat imagery from 1985-2021. The RCMAP product suite consists of nine fractional components: annual herbaceous, bare ground, herbaceous, litter, non-sagebrush shrub, perennial herbaceous, sagebrush, shrub, and tree, in addition to the temporal trends of each component. Several enhancements were made to the RCMAP process relative to prior generations. First, we have trained time-series predictions directly from 331 high-resolution sites collected from 2013-2018 from Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) instead of using the 2016 “base” map as an intermediary....

We systematically surveyed federal and state wildlife biologists, hydrological specialists, non-profit organizations, and working groups focused on beaver or wetland restoration in the western U.S. We focused primarily on contacting land managers from states containing some portion of the Great Basin, although many of the projects described in surveys fell outside of this watershed. Some land managers suggested colleagues who might be interested in participating in our study and these individuals were added to our list of contacts. We also performed a literature search using Google Scholar. We included only articles that were focused on primary research performed in the arid or semi-arid western US. We compiled...

This raster portrays the distribution of sagebrush within the geographic extent of the sagebrush biome in the United States. It was created for the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency’s (WAFWA) Sagebrush Conservation Strategy publication as a visual for the schematic figures and to calculate summary statistics. This distribution incorporates the most recently available sagebrush cover mapping (Xian et al. 2015, Rigge et al. 2019) and classified LANDFIRE EVT (Department of Ecosystem Science, University of Wyoming 2016). Both datasets were rigorously evaluated and extensive ground measurements taken to evaluate accuracy by the respective authors. We created a combined binary sagebrush distribution by classifying...

The dataset includes several variables sampled across 54 recently burned aspen sites, with data collected in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, the dataset includes mean 30-year (1980-2008) and mean six year ‘fire-regen period’ (i.e., fire year and five years after fire) climate values for each site. The climate data presented here were used to calculate explanatory variables used in analysis, as outlined in the publication. Plots were located across a regional climate gradient spanning from the north-central Great Basin to the northeastern portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (USA). Several attributes (e.g. tree characteristics, evidence of animal herbivory, shrub cover) were sampled at each plot. All trees present...

This dataset provides a near-real-time estimate of 2019 herbaceous annual cover with an emphasis on annual grass (Boyte and Wylie. 2016. Near-real-time cheatgrass percent cover in the Northern Great Basin, USA, 2015. Rangelands 38:278-284.) This estimate was based on remotely sensed enhanced Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (eMODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data gathered through June 24, 2019. This is the second iteration of an early estimate of herbaceous annual cover for 2019 over the same geographic area. The previous dataset used eMODIS NDVI data gathered through April 28, 2019 (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZEK5M1). The pixel values for this most recent estimate ranged from 0 to100%...

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Wendover, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S....
