Residual effects of nutrient additions were sustained in shrubs 4-8 years after fertilization stopped in a northern boreal forest in Yukon, Canada. We measured the growth rate of grey willow (Salix glauca L.) and bog birch (Betula glandulosa Michx.) twigs during the growing seasons of 1998, 2001, and 2002, 4-8 years after NPK fertilization from 1987 to 1994 had ceased. We also measured the nitrogen concentration of the 1998 growth tissue. Willow twigs had significantly higher growth rates in previously fertilized shrubs than control shrubs in these 3 years, even greater than differences observed during fertilization. Willow also had higher N concentration in fertilized twigs than control twigs. Birch growth was...

Symbioses between plants and nitrogen (N) fixing bacteria are ecologically and economically important interactions with complex evolution and ecology. Theoretical and experimental studies suggest that host specificity and environmental variation are important determinants of both evolutionary and ecological patterns in such interactions, but detailed descriptions of these parameters in natural habitats are lacking for most N-fixing systems. The aim of this set of studies was to provide such information for the symbiosis between alder ( Alnus spp.) plants and Frankia bacteria in interior Alaska. Major objectives were to determine whether: 1) different Alnus species (A. tenuifolia and A. viridis ) associate with different...
Atmospheric nitrogen (N) fixation by Alnus tenuifolia can account for up to 70% of the N accumulated during vegetation development along river floodplains in interior Alaska. We assessed disease incidence and related mortality of a recent outbreak of fungal stem cankers on A. tenuifolia across three regions in Alaska during the 2005 growing season, and determined the impacts on N-fixation rates, nodule biomass, and stand-level N-fixation inputs. The highest percentage of ramets colonized or dead with canker was found on Tanana River plots, suggesting the epidemic is most severe in the Fairbanks region. A positive relationship between % basal area loss to canker and % canopy loss provides a simple means for assessing...

Nine native taxa including Carex oligosperma, C. pauciflora, C. pellita, Chimaphila umbellata ssp. occidentalis, Draba densifolia, x Elyleymus hirtiflorus, Eriophorum vaginatum ssp. spissum, Impatiens ? capensis, and Rhus radicans are reported new to the known flora of the Yukon Territory. Eight introduced taxa are also reported as new to the known flora. Significant range extensions within the Territory are reported for 180 native and 17 introduced taxa. Comments are presented on three native taxa and two native taxa are deleted from the Territory.
