A digital model of the sedimentary Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system is composed of 20 rasters and hydrogeologic unit extent polygons. Rasters describe the top elevations of regional aquifers and confining units at a resolution of 2640 feet (1/2 mile). The rasters are clipped to the extent polygons, which represent the spatial extents of the hydrogeologic units onshore and several miles offshore. This three-dimensional hydrogeologic model was constructed as part of a U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program study of groundwater availability in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain (NACP) aquifer system, including parts of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina....

A regional groundwater-flow model and particle-tracking program were used to delineate areas contributing groundwater to coastal and freshwater bodies and to estimate travel times from the water table to saline water bodies under average conditions from 1968 to 1983 on Long Island, New York. The coastal waters of Long Island are important economic and recreational resources for the region. The coastal water bodies receive freshwater from inflow of both surface water and groundwater, in addition to tidal exchanges of saltwater. Excessive nitrogen inputs associated with development and urbanization in the freshwater recharge areas to coastal water bodies can adversely affect marine and estuarine ecosystems. The results...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing online maps of water-table and potentiometric-surface altitude in the upper glacial, Magothy, Jameco, Lloyd, and North Shore aquifers on Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. Also provided is a depth-to-water map for Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. This data release contains geospatial data defining estimates of the depth to water and water-table altitude in the upper glacial and Magothy Aquifers, the potentiometric surface of the confined Magothy and Jameco Aquifers, and the potentiometric surface of the Lloyd and North Shore Aquifers on Long Island, New York. Estimates are based on 502 water-level measurements made in wells across Long Island during March-April 2006. Water-table contours were interpolated using measurements from 341 wells screened in the upper glacial aquifer or shallow Magothy Aquifer. Potentiometric-surface contours in the confined Magothy and hydraulically connected Jameco Aquifer were interpolated using measurements from 102 wells. Potentiometric-surface...

Data used to model and map manganese concentrations in groundwater in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain (NACP) aquifer system, eastern USA, are documented in this data release. The model predicts manganese concentration within four classes and is based on concentration data from 4492 wells. The well data were compiled from U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Suffolk County Water Authority (Suffolk County, New York), and state agency sources. The four concentration classes are based on guidelines for drinking water quality: below detection (class 1, less than 10 micrograms per liter (ug/L)); detected but less than the aesthetic guideline of 50 ug/L (class 2); greater than the aesthetic...
This child item dataset contains 22,871 records of chloride concentration in groundwater across Kings, Queens, and Nassau Counties in Long Island, New York. Compiled records span the period from 1889 to 2022. Records are provided in a shapefile of point data compiled from several sources detailed in the metadata. Chloride isolines (isochlors) are also included as a shapefile of interpolated point data representing average conditions over 11 twenty-year time periods in the two main Long Island aquifer complexes (Upper glacial-Jameco-Magothy and North Shore-Lloyd). Interpolation methods are discussed in Stumm and others (2024). These data are accessible as an online webmap: https://ny.water.usgs.gov/maps/lisustainabilityphase1viewer/

Data used to model and map pH and redox conditions in groundwater in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system, eastern USA, are documented in this data release. The models use as input data measurements of pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations at about 3000 to 5000 wells, which were compiled primarily from U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency databases. The boosted regression trees machine learning method was used to build the models. Explanatory variables (predictors) describe geology, hydrology, chemistry, physical characteristics, anthropogenic influence, metrics from a groundwater flow model, and groundwater residence times in the aquifer system. Data for four models are...

This child item dataset contains shapefiles and rasters defining the hydrogeologic framework of Kings, Queens, and Nassau Counties, New York. These data were derived from 643 lithologic and (or) geophysical logs, defining 1,715 contacts between different aquifers and confining units across western Long Island. Extents, contour elevation lines and interpolated surfaces were created for each of the framework units. These data are accessible as an online webmap: https://ny.water.usgs.gov/maps/lisustainabilityphase1viewer/
A three-dimensional steady-state groundwater flow model is coupled with the particle-tracking program, MODPATH, to assess the fate and transport of volatile organic compound plumes within the Magothy and upper glacial aquifers in southeastern Nassau County, NY. Knowledge of groundwater-flow patterns and rates is essential for effective management of groundwater resources and for mitigation of potential adverse effects of the plumes on drinking-water supplies and on ecosystems. Eight hypothetical remedial scenarios were evaluated to hydraulically contain a VOC plume. Specifically, the remedial scenarios were optimized to achieve full containment by altering the pumping well locations, adjusting the pumping rates,...
