The USGS Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation's inventory of protected areas, including public open space and voluntarily provided, private protected areas, identified as an A-16 National Geospatial Data Asset in the Cadastral Theme (http://www.fgdc.gov/ngda-reports/NGDA_Datasets.html). PAD-US is an ongoing project with several published versions of a spatial database of areas dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity, and other natural, recreational or cultural uses, managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. The geodatabase maps and describes public open space and other protected areas. Most areas are public lands owned in fee; however, long-term...

This polygon feature class represents the vegetation and land-use geo-spatial data for Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) and surrounding areas. The polygons were generated using guidelines set by the Standardized National Vegetation Classification System (October 1995). Polygons were created on screen by digitizing of vegetation map types using 2002 imagery flown for the vegetation mapping project. Hard copy 9x9 photography was used for photo interpretation as well. Traditional image interpretation cues were used to develop the polygons, such as shape, size, pattern, tone, texture, color, and shadow. Additional data layers were used in aiding the interpretation, such as slope, hydrology, soils, geography, and ground-collected...
These polygon features represent digitization of the glacier margins for the 37 named glaciers of Glacier National Park (GNP) and the 2 glaciers along the border of GNP derived from aerial images acquired on September 11, 12, 14, 15, 1998. The polygons represent only the main body portion of the glacier as they appeared in the 1998 imagery. Disconnected patches are not included as this dataset represents only the main body features. Polygons were digitized from orthorectified aerial images with initial digitization completed in 2001 by Michelle Manly, University of North Dakota graduate student. This set of polygons represents a thorough review with revisions to the initial dataset based on local knowledge and improved...

The data in this release map Marconi Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach, and Nauset Light Beach, in Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Massachusetts, before and after Hurricane Lee in September 2023. U.S Geological Survey personnel conducted field surveys to collect topographic data using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) at all three beaches. In addition, at Nauset Light Beach, an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) was used to collect images with a Ricoh GRII camera for use in structure from motion photogrammetry. High-precision GNSS targets (AeroPoints) were used as ground control points (GCPs) for the UAS photogrammetry. Agisoft Metashape (v. 2.0.1) software was used to create a digital surface model and an orthomosaic...
High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

Staff at Bryce Canyon National Park conducted noise monitoring surveys from 30 May to 31 August 1995 at five sites using the 15-second Leq method. Noise levels from helicopters, planes, jets, and other mechanical means, as well as natural or background noise were monitored. Aircraft were heard park-wide an average 18.8% of the time with an average of 36.4 decibels. Site-specific information is presented on peak decibel levels, average noise levels, and number of aircraft overflights. Published in Proceedings of the Third Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau, in 1996.

This polygon feature class represents vegetation communities mapped at Natural Bridges National Monument. The polygons were generated using guidelines set by the Standardized National Vegetation Classification System (October 1995). Original lines were drawn on a mylar overlay of printed 1:12,000 digital scale orthophoto quadrangles (DOQ), collected the summer of 2002. Hard copy 9X9 photography was used for photo interpretation. Traditional image interpretation cues were used to develop the polygons, such as shape, size, pattern, tone, texture, color, and shadow. Additional data layers were used in aiding the interpretation, such as slope, hydrology, geography, and ground-collected vegetation information. The lines...

This shapefile is an vegetation map of Booker T. Washington National Monument, Virginia. It was developed by The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage in cooperation with North Carolina State University's Center for Earth Observation for the Northeast Region of the National Park Service. The data was created following general guidelines set forth by the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program. Map classes are crosswalked to the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) or level II of the Andersons land use land cover classification system. Crosswalks to the USNVC were determined on February 20, 2007. The map is based on field work performed in the summer of 2002 and photo...
Vegetation map of Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site provides local park-specific names for vegetation types, as well as crosswalks to the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS), including association, alliance and formation level attributes. Crosswalks to the NVCS were determined on March 7, 2006.
This polygon feature class represents vegetation communities mapped at Golden Spike National Historic Site. The polygons were generated using guidelines set by the Standardized National Vegetation Classification System (October 1995). Vegetation polygons were drawn on-screen using the aerial 2006 photography. Traditional image interpretation cues were used to develop the polygons, such as shape, size, pattern, tone, texture, color, and shadow. Additional data layers were used in aiding the interpretation, such as slope, hydrology, geography, and ground-collected vegetation information. As with any digital layer, this layer is a representation of what is actually occurring on the ground at the time the imagery was...
