We developed a vegetation classification and high-resolution vegetation map for Petroglyph National Monument, New Mexico, as part of the USGS Vegetation Characterization Program, a cooperative effort by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring - Vegetation Mapping Program to classify, describe, and map vegetation communities in more than 280 national park units across the United States. The classification and map follow the guidelines and requirements of the national program, and are based on data collected from 499 field plots between 2007 and 2011 plus 469 independent survey points to assess the accuracy of the map and completeness of the classification.

A vegetation map of Bandelier National Monument. This map is based on natural color orthophotography acquired in 2004 with a spatial resolution of 1 meter, displayed at 1:24,000 scale. Map units were delineated using aerial photo interpretation and image analysis based on 729 field survey points collected between 2003 and 2006. Final map compiled in ArcGIS Version 9.3, January, 2010. For details see Muldavin, E., A. Kennedy, C. Jackson, T. Neville, P. Neville, K. Schulz, and M. Reid. 2010. A Vegetation Classification and Map Report: Bandelier National Monument. Natural Resource Technical Report NPS/SCPN/NRTR-2010/00X, National Park Service, Fort Collins, Colorado.

The geographic information system (GIS) format spatial data set of vegetation for Buffalo National River (BUFF) was created for the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Inventory Program (VIP). The BUFF administrative boundary covers an area of nearly 38,000 ha. The map classification scheme used to create the vegetation data set is designed to represent local vegetation types at the finest level possible using the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS) Version 2. Physiognomic information was also recorded, including height (woody vegetation), canopy density, and coverage patterns. The vegetation data set was developed by interpreting aerial photographs collected in October of 2006 and extensive field...

We developed a vegetation classification and high-resolution vegetation map for El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico, as part of the USGS Vegetation Characterization Program, a cooperative effort by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring - Vegetation Mapping Program to classify, describe, and map vegetation communities in more than 280 national park units across the United States. The classification and map follow the guidelines and requirements of the national program, and were based on data collected from 476 field plots between 2006 and 2009. Based on the field sampling, we identified 50 plant associations following the guidelines of the National Vegetation...

The geographic information system (GIS) format spatial data set of vegetation for Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway (SACN) was created for the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Inventory Program (VIP). The SACN administrative boundary covers an area of nearly 39,500 ha. The project boundary for the SACN vegetation mapping project covers an areas of just over 68,200 ha with the approximate 300 m buffer. The map classification scheme used to create the vegetation data set is designed to represent local vegetation types at the finest level possible using the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS) Version 2. Physiognomic information was also recorded, including height (woody vegetation), canopy density,...

The Central Mojave Special Features shapefile provides point locations for known or potential places where vegetation alliances or unique stands occurred (from 1997-1999) with less than 5 hectares of spatial extent. These designations were provided separately from the Mojave Vegetation Polygons because the target standard for the polygons was a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 5 hectares, thus methods used at the time to assign labels precluded mapping these special features as polygons. The special features points are still included because it is important to note the known or potential location of vegetation alliances for future mapping at finer spatial resolution. The metadata record (Mojave-Vegetation-Mapping_Special-Features-Points-Metadata.xml)...

Vegetation map of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. A consistent, ecologically based vegetation classification forms the foundation for the development of an information-rich vegetation map. Vegetation classifications are ground-based descriptions of vegetation patterns that take into account floristic composition and abundance, site characteristics, and ecological dynamics. Accordingly, for SAPU, we used field sampling and analysis to develop a hierarchical classification following the National Vegetation Classification Standard (FGDC 1997 and; 2008).

The Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons shapefile represents areas of the Mojave Desert classified into vegetation classes or alliances representative of the area from 1997-1999. The classification of these areas were derived from context gathered in the field data, photographs and additional satellite imagery that is not included in this data release. The original map coverage was preserved and released as a shapefile (mojave_veg_polygons.shp). In contrast to the Special Features Points vegetation classifications (described in the Special Features Points shapefile metadata record and ScienceBase item), the Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons were designated by vegetation alliances that extended 5 hectares or more....

The Mojave Vegetation field data were collected to provide context for the classification of the Central Mojave Desert into various vegetation classes. The field data consist of five CSV tables, recovered from their original Microsoft Access format, that together describe the vegetative, environmental and geomorphic properties of the Central Mojave Desert at the time of collection, 1997-1999. The portion of the study’s field data preserved in this release consists of observations made at the 1,219 points included in the plots points shapefile (plots_points.shp) found on the Plots Points and Photographs ScienceBase page. The field measurements (described here) and photographs (described in the Plots Points and Photographs...

The Central Mojave Vegetation Map (mojveg.e00) displays vegetation and other land cover types in the eastern Mojave of California. Map labels represent alliances and groups of alliances as described by the National Vegetation Classification. The nominal minimum mapping unit is 5 hectares. Each map unit is labeled by a primary land cover type and a secondary type where applicable. In addition, the source of data for labeling each map unit is also identified in the attribute table for each map unit. Data were developed using field visits, 1:32,000 aerial photography, SPOT satellite imagery, and predictive modeling.

The geographic information system (GIS) format spatial data set of vegetation for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CUVA) was created for the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Inventory Program (VIP). The CUVA administrative boundary covers an area of nearly 13,000 ha. The map classification scheme used to create the vegetation data set is designed to represent local vegetation types at the finest level possible using the National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS) Version 2. Physiognomic information was also recorded, including height (woody vegetation), canopy density, and coverage patterns. The vegetation data set was developed by interpreting aerial imagery collected in October of 2010 and extensive...

The Mojave Plots Points data are 1,219 plot locations in the Central Mojave Desert where field data were recorded and photographs were taken from 1997-1999 to provide context for the classification of the Central Mojave Desert into various vegetation classes. The 1,219 plot locations in the plots points shapefile (plots_points.shp) are each assigned a unique identifier called the FinalPlotCode. The FinalPlotCode can be used to match the shapefile points to the Mojave Field Data. The attached CSV file (Mojave_Images_Crosswalk.csv) can be used to relate the FinalPlotCodes to the associated photographs that are attached as zipped TIFF images to the ScienceBase page. There are 1,695 total photographs available that...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data at Risk (DaR) team partnered with the USGS Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) to preserve and release tabular data, shapefiles and field photographs of the Central Mojave Desert from 1997-1999. The data were originally collected as part of an effort through the Desert Managers Group (DMG) to develop scientific information on the distribution and characteristics of vegetation in the eastern Mojave Desert of California. This data preservation effort recovers information from obsolete geospatial files, database files, and field photographs and releases it all in open-source formats. The data made available in this release provide historic context on the species composition...
