Forest structural stages for all ownerships within the Western Oregon Plan Revision (WOPR) area for year 2026. 25 meter pixels are classified as either unclassified/non-forest, stand establishment, young, mature, or structurally complex forest. Classification of BLM lands are derived from the WOPR OPTIONS models. This theme shows the two zones for Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus). The first zone comprises the area from the coast to a line mirroring the coast thirty-five miles inland. The second zone comprises the area from the eastern edge of the first zone and north of the Medford BLM district boundary to a line mirroring the coast fifty miles inland. The southern sections of this zone have been adjusted from the original zones, for WOPR purposes. These zones show the areas of Marbled Murrelet habitat with most of the population occurring closer to the coast. The Georgia Basin supports a globally unique mix of dry forest and savannah habitats that evolved under historic climates and First Nations land management. These extraordinary areas still provide ecosystem services essential to human health and well-being and are widely recognized for their outstanding beauty, recreational and economic values. However, most of this habitat has been converted to human use and what remains will be lost without further investment in conservation and restoration activities. We use leading-edge methods to prioritize stewardship actions, identify conservation networks likely to facilitate species persistence under climate change, and maximize return on conservation investments.

For his MS thesis, Brendan Rogers used the vegetation model MC1 to simulate vegetation dynamics, associated carbon and nitrogen cycle, water budget and wild fire impacts across the western 2/3 of the states of Oregon and Washington using climate input data from the PRISM group (Chris Daly, OSU) at a 30arc second (800m) spatial grain. The model was run from 1895 to 2100 assuming that nitrogen demand from the plants was always met so that the nitrogen concentrations in various plant parts never dropped below their minimum reported values. The Geoduck catch and effort grid dataset has been assembled directly from the Shellfish Stock Assessment harvest log database located at the Pacific Biological Station (PBS). The dataset has been modified to meet the sensitive nature of the data as per the Access to Information Act20(1)(b,c); which specifies that Fisheries and Oceans Canada will not disclose to a third party confidential information that may prejudice the competitive position of the fisher, in which fishing location has been identified as one of the entities to be protected. The Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Forests, Lands, & Natural Resource Operations, in partnership with Simon Fraser University and the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, led a third workshop to develop cross-boundary geospatial and climate data sets in support of regional conservation applications across NPLCC international boundaries. The workshop will provide opportunities for communicating and discussing priorities for the exchange, development and unification of geospatial and climate datasets.

The North Pacific Forest Landscape Corridor and Connectivity Project utilized a landscape connectivity simulator (UNICOR) and a genetic simulation program (CDPOP) to model the functional (dispersal and genetic) connectivity in the North Pacific Landscape. This project developed hydrologic projections for diverse wetland habitats (e.g. forest wetlands, wet meadows, small ponds, and riparian wetlands) in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) for the 2020s, 2040s, and 2080s, which can be used to support ecological and landscape-based vulnerability assessments and climate change adaptation planning. This project will complete a tribally-based climate change vulnerability assessment t and adaptation plan for Eulachon that spawn in the Chilkoot and Chilkat rivers near Haines, Alaska. Local monitoring will collect data on spawning populations in the Chilkoot River, and a tribal stakeholder group will be convened to analyze climate change projections, apply traditional knowledge, rank climate vulnerabilities, and prioritized adaptation strategies.

A sea level rise vulnerability assessment has been completed for the shorelines of San Juan County Washington. This tool was developed to enhance understanding among land managers, provide a scientific foundation for shoreline management decisions and improve conservation of shoreline processes critical to ecosystem health. This project will create a comprehensive communication strategy that includes improving the model’s credibility, researching adaptation strategies, creating decision support tools, and hosting focus meetings.

Existing stream temperature data will be compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. Spatial statistical models for river networks will be applied to these data to develop an accurate model that predicts stream temperature for all fish-bearing streams in the US portion of the NPLCC. Differences between model outputs for historic and future climate scenarios will be used to assess spatial variation in the vulnerability of sensitive fish species across the NPLCC.

Background: Yellow-cedar (Callitropsis nootkatensis) is an economically and culturally important tree of the North Pacific coastal rainforest, ranging from northern California through Southeast Alaska. The species has been in decline for many decades, particularly in the northern portion of its range (Southeast Alaska and coastal British Columbia), and is currently under consideration for listing as Threatened or Endangered.
