Urban communities are increasingly shaping the conservation future of the South Atlantic. Major metropolitan areas present both direct threats, such as loss habitat and open space, and indirect threats, such as creating barriers to connectivity. As a result of both these direct and indirect threats, and their scale, metropolitan areas pose a challenge when thinking about corridors and connectivity, and many of the traditional approaches to green infrastructure and conservation are not adequate for urban areas. The Conservation Blueprint (Blueprint) is cross-boundary, cross-organization plan that prioritizes areas for shared conservation action in the South Atlantic. It is designed as a resource for conservation...

The PFLCC has recently completed a set of comprehensive conservation planning scenarios for the state of Florida. This represents the first statewide effort to assess likely alternative futures for conservation considering an array of financial, biological, climatological and urbanistic conditions. These spatially explicit and temporal scenarios simulate both urban growth and climate change and identify the most suitable areas for conservation given the resulting land use pattern. Conservation allocations are based on both fee-title and conservation easements. The conservation priorities and mechanisms expressed in these scenarios are based on a wide set of contributing factors, and simulated conservation is purposefully...
This data release contains measurements of acid-neutralizing capacity, conductance at 25 degrees Celsius, and Ca concentrations for headwater stream samples collected from 1988 to 2022 in the Adirondack region of New York. Sample analyses were performed by the Adirondack Lake Survey Corporation (ALSC) laboratory and are adjusted here to be consistent with measurements made in the USGS New York Water Science Laboratory Low Ionic Strength Laboratory using relations in Lawrence (2022). Both original ALCS values and adjusted values are presented in 3 comma-separated values (CSV) files.
This is a collaborative project between the National Park Service (NPS) and the University of Washington to use new satellite data to assess changes in several glaciers in North Cascades National Park (NOCA). Recent investigations have shown that the glaciers in the Washington Cascades are retreating rapidly in a warming climate. NPS has monitoring data from four glaciers at NOCA. These data will be analyzed with new WorldView stereo satellite data to produce digital elevation models (DEMs) with high accuracy for four NOCA glaciers, and to calculate volume changes in these glaciers. Expected products include four DEMs with auxiliary products (e.g., image data) and a final report that describes the methods and detected...

QuestionHow to help extension forestry and PNW deliver Global Climate Change information in the future?ObjectivesDetermine the perceptions, understanding, and educational needs of private forest landowners in the Pacific and Inland Northwest regarding the impacts of global climate change (GCC) on western forests, and enhance their understanding and awareness of the potential impacts of GCC on ecosystem functions on their own forests such as stream flows, fire regimes, wildlife habitat, and vegetation changesImpactsFamily forest owners will be better prepared for of global climate change.AbstractFamily forest landowners control over 40% of the nation’s forestland. In the PNW privately owned family forest lands are...
This is a collaborative project between the National Park Service (NPS) and Oregon State University (OSU) for the purpose of studying the genetic connectivity of pika populations in five NPS units. OSU researchers will use individual and population-based genetic analyses to systematically estimate genetic distances among individuals and gene flow among patches or populations in NPS units in two very different habitats (talus vs. lava beds). Genetic distances among individuals or gene flow among groups reflect (in part) the degree that individuals are related and that populations are interacting via dispersal. Thus, researchers will use variation in genetic distance or gene flow to infer how landscapes (e.g., dispersal...
