In 1897 Sir Archibald Geikie came to America to deliver a series of lectures on the "Founders of Geology" at Johns Hopkins University. One of the highlights of his visit was a field trip to the falls of the Potomac. Nearly fifty geologists from Washington and Baltimore participated in the excursion.
