The California Coast Range are an area with a long-lived deformation history which includes modern, ongoing right lateral strike slip faulting. Large strike slip faults in the region include the San Andreas fault, the Maacama fault, the Bartlett Springs fault among many others. In areas where strike slip fault geometry changes, either in restraining or releasing bends, vertical motion may occur in response to dominant right-lateral deformation. Channel steepness and chi data may be used to identify areas of recent uplift where the bedrock hardness and local precipitation gradients are known. This dataset provides a map of channel steepness and chi and was generated with Land Surface Dynamics Topography Tools software...

Information on water depth in river channels is important for a number of applications in water resource management but can be difficult to obtain via conventional field methods, particularly over large spatial extents and with the kind of frequency and regularity required to support monitoring programs. Remote sensing methods could provide a viable alternative means of mapping river bathymetry (i.e., water depth). The purpose of this study was to develop and test new, spectrally based techniques for estimating water depth from satellite image data. More specifically, a neural network-based temporal ensembling approach was evaluated in comparison to several other neural network depth retrieval (NNDR) algorithms....

The purpose of the data collection was to monitor the microclimate in the “Bonito Flow” Ice Cave located in Sunset Crater National Monument. This cave is considered a sacred spot for some southwestern tribes as it was a historical source for ice. The main purpose of the climate monitoring was to determine if the cave is still an active ice cave, i.e., a cave that contains perennial ice. The data acquired consists of temperatures, humidity, and pressures throughout the cave structure and also includes temperatures and humidity measured outside of the cave, near the entrance. Sensors were distributed throughout the cave but focus on a large ice puddle that forms on the cave floor during the winter months. Cave floors...

USGS is assessing the feasibility of a map projections and grid systmes for lunar surface operations. We propose developing a new Lunar Transverse Mercator (LTM), the Lunar Polar Stereographic (LPS), and the Lunar Grid Reference Systems (LGRS). We have also embedded additional grids designed to NASA requirements for astronaut navigation, referred to as LGRS Artemis Condensed Coordinates (ACC). LTM, LPS, and LGRS are similar in design and use to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Universal Polar Stereographic (LPS), and Military Grid Reference System (MGRS), but adhere to NASA requirements. LGRS ACC format is similar in design to historic Army Mapping Service Apollo orthotopophoto charts for navigation.

We developed a LiDAR-based habitat model for the threatened Marbled Murrelet (MAMU) in the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon, using a two-step approach. First, we tested the applicability of the LiDAR-based model developed for the Coos Bay District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the Siuslaw N.F. In the second step, we tested alternative habitat models developed with forest structural data and Murrelet survey data from the Siuslaw N.F. We compared the performance of each model to provide forest managers with the best predictive tool to guide habitat management for the Marbled Murrelet. This shapefile contains the probability of Marbled Murrelet occupancy values of each model for vegetation polygons defined...

We provide a roads dataset that includes the spatial location of roads, the estimated age of each road, and the predicted traffic volume of each road between 1986 and 2020 in Wyoming, USA. Our annual estimates of traffic volume are available for each road and include estimates for all vehicles and truck only traffic. Moreover, we provide the estimated age of each road, where a minimum value of 1986 indicates that the road existed in 1986, and any later year indicates the most likely year that road was developed. This dataset will be beneficial for any research focused on the mechanistic effects of road traffic on wildlife populations. Our roads dataset is based on a comprehensive inventory of paved and unpaved roads...

These data provide on-the-ground estimates of burn severity as estimated by the Composite Burn Index (CBI) for fires that burned between 1994 and 2018. Landsat imagery was subsequently used to develop regression relationships between the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and differenced NBR (dNBR).
Hurricane Maria caused widespread landsliding throughout Puerto Rico during September 2017. Previous detailed landslide inventories following the hurricane include Bessette-Kirton et al. (2017, 2019). Here we continue that work with an in-depth look at a portion of northwest Naranjito, which is a municipality in the northeastern part of the main island. To study a characteristic sample of landslides in Naranjito, we mapped all visible individual landslides in an approximately triangular area 2.3 km wide by 1.9 km long. The boundary of our mapping was defined by previous studies (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). We used aerial imagery collected between 9-15 October 2017 (Quantum Spatial, Inc., 2017) to map landslide...

A site-specific multilayer perceptron model was developed to classify PlanetScope satellite imagery of Minnesota Point, and the classifier was paired with a shoreline delineation routine to extract the position of the land-water interface. Satellite-dervived shorelines were used to measure changes in beach width associated with beach nourishment projects and changing water levels. The model is based on methods documented in Doherty, et al., 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2022.105512). This model archive includes the source code, the site-specific classifier, the labeled imagery used to train said classifier, and a subset of the input data needed to run the model. The input satellite imagery required to...
