Ideal observation sites are located near tributary-mainstem confluences and provide frequent, synchronous measurements of physical, chemical, and biological attributes. This “nested watershed”design supports characterization of environmental conditions adjacent to the sampling stations, whileinstream hydrological measurements will reflect both local conditions and inputs from upstream. TEON observations sites are stratified by ecoregions, so we can aggregate data sets across the network to characterize conditions at the ecoregion scale.

Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) form a national network of partnerships working collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to address landscape-style changes and impacts to America’s land, water, wildlife and cultural resources by leveraging and sharing science capacity. The Gulf Coast Prairie LCC is partnering with the Southeast Aquatic Resource Partnership (SARP) to ensure that the rich aquatic resources of their region are protected from impacts of future population growth and climate change. SARP has identified flow alteration as a priority threat and is helping the GCPLCC to advance regional instream flow science by developing basic information necessary to support credible instream...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), as part of the Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) has collected discrete stream samples for analysis of suspended-sediment concentrations at eight real-time streamflow and water-quality monitoring (turbidity and suspended sediment) stations located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York in the Delaware River Basin. Data were collected from 2019-2022 at these stations for the application of predicting suspended-sediment concentrations using real-time continuous turbidity, suspended sediment from an uncalibrated sensor, and streamflow data. Regression equations were developed by relating discrete-sample suspended sediment and continuous turbidity, suspended sediment...

Problem The quality of surface water has important effects on human and ecological health. Surface water is an important drinking water source and is used for swimming, fishing, and recreation, and the quality of surface water can have profound effects on the health, diversity, and resilience of ecological communities. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) is tasked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to monitor ambient water quality of the State. The NYSDEC is also tasked to develop Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for state waters that fail to meet their intended use. A critical first step in maintaining high quality of surface-water is assessment of existing...

Reliable estimates of the magnitude and frequency of floods are an important part of the framework for hydraulic-structure design and flood-plain management. Annual peak flows measured at U.S. Geological Survey streamgages are used to compute flood-frequency estimates at those streamgages. However, flood-frequency estimates also are needed at ungaged stream locations. A process known as regionalization was used to develop regression equations to estimate the magnitude and frequency of floods at ungaged locations. This dataset contains the supporting tables and updated hydrologic region boundaries used in the 2017 flood-frequency study for Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Problem The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has asked the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to assist in two major studies: 1) delineation of the source(s) of shallow groundwater and the extent that the Delaware Aqueduct is contributing to local flooding issues, and 2) delineation of the structural, geologic, and hydrologic conditions along proposed tunnel construction paths using advanced surface and borehole geophysical methods. The NYCDEP needs to determine the source of groundwater and surface water and their possible relation to leakage from the Delaware Aqueduct in upstate New York. The Delaware Aqueduct, which supplies a significant portion of New York City's water supply, has...

A data and code repository for studies conducted as part of the Delaware River Basin (DRB) Integrated Water Availability Assessments program. The community serves as a site where hydrologic, physical, chemical, biological, and landscape data can be stored and used for modeling and geospatial analysis to improved understanding of water availability in the DRB.
R6 SA (Science Applications), in cooperation with project collaborators and watershed stakeholders (watershed coordinators, Montana State University, MTDRC, EPA, conservation districts, TU) created the River Conditions Tool (RCT) to drive conservation actions via real-time stream gage data with predetermined aquatic, riverine, drought management science. This broad scale tool downscales to individual stream segments providing the ability of watershed groups to customize predetermined conservation triggers for immediate conservation action through real-time situational awareness at fine scales for all water users and in effect becomes a catalog of conservation activities for the entire broad scale project area.

TEON uses a “nested” approach to data collection. The smallest unit within TEON is a Station. Stationsinclude discrete sampling locations or units (e.g., plot or transect) where repeated measures of a givenvariable are collected to create a time-series. Data collected at a station may be relevant to localconditions (e.g., soil temperature at a given site) or applicable to a larger area (e.g., streamgage locatedat the lower end of a watershed). A Site is a collection of stations that are typically located within closeproximity to each other. Sites are grouped into Watersheds. Watersheds will encompass many ecotypes and span multiple ecoregions. Watersheds in aggregate form the TEON network.

This dataset features inundated areas connected to the main channel at discharges from 15,000 cfs to 95,000 cfs. The spatial extent for floodplain inundation modeling in the lower Trinity River was from Romayor, Texas, to approximately Moss Bluff, Texas. River sections were modeled using steady flow conditions. For the upper section, discharge and stage were both available for the two gages (Romayor USGS 08066500 and Liberty USGS 08067000). For the lower section, the Moss Bluff gage (USGS 08067100) is tidally-influenced, so gage height didn’t correspond to upstream changes in discharge. To model river stage specific inundation for the upper section, discharge for each Landsat 8 overpass date was entered as the upstream...
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Nature Conservancy developed the Sustainable Rivers Program (SRP) as a collaborative environmental flows program to identify, refine, and implement environmental strategies at select USACE dams. The SRP was introduced to the Willamette Basin, Oregon, in 2007 through a series of environmental flow workshops, which led to stakeholder generated environmental flow recommendations in the North Santiam, South Santiam, Santiam (Bach and others, 2013), McKenzie, South Fork McKenzie (Risley and others, 2010), and Middle Fork Willamette Rivers (Gregory and others, 2007, https://www.hec.usace.army.mil/sustainablerivers/). This data release is a compilation of the stakeholder-defined...

We propose to empirically characterize hydrology/fish-production relationships for different ecological groups of fishes living in the Red River and associated reservoir habitats by: 1. Correlating historic hydrologic data with catch curve residuals, and 2. Annual growth rate estimates of fish collected from the Red River and associated reservoirs. The catch curve residual approach for indexing year class strength has been validated and successfully used to quantify the relationship between reservoir hydrology and YOY recruitment for white crappie and largemouth. The essence of the approach is as follows. Catch curves (a correlation between the natural log of fish abundance and age) are used to measure total instantaneous...

The Arctic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) and the North Slope Science Initiative have both identified the importance of synthesizing and disseminating existing climate and hydrology data as well as improving the design of climate and hydrologic monitoring networks to meet management and research needs. We have partnered with the Arctic LCC to address this issue. During this project we designed a geodatabase called Imiq, inventoried hydrologic, climate, and related datasets, and populated the Imiq database with both data and metadata. Finally, we analyzed some of the spatial characteristics of the existing hydroclimate data and the observational network structure, in an effort to inform the development...
