As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Cores were continuous from land surface down to 240 feet below land surface and were drilled by consultants to EPA using sonic rotary–a fluidless drilling technique. The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, obtains all of its potable water supply from three groundwater basins (Irwin, Langford, and Bicycle Basins) within the NTC boundaries. In these basins, groundwater withdrawals exceed natural recharge, resulting in water-level declines. However, managed aquifer recharge using recycled water (treated wastewater) has offset water-level declines in Irwin Basin. Additionally, localized water-quality changes have occurred in some parts of Irwin Basin as a result of human activities (for example, wastewater disposal practices, landscape irrigation, and (or) leaking pipes). This data release contains numerical U- and Th-isotopic data used to calculate uranium-series age estimates and initial 234U/238U activity ratios for samples of carbonate-rich clast coatings, oncoidal tufa rinds, calcite-replaced rhizoliths, carbonate nodules, and ostracod shells from sites associated with different lake levels of paleo Lake Manix near Barsow, CA. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Sentinel-1A satellite were acquired for this study from the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) and used to generate spatially detailed land-surface deformation maps (interferograms) for the Mojave River and Morongo groundwater basins during 2014–19 using InSAR methods.

The characteristics, discharge, and water quality of springs and seeps, at the Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC) were evaluated during 2015 and 2016. Geophysical, hydrological, and water-quality data were used to help characterize and document a baseline of current (2016) hydrologic conditions and water quality of springs and seeps located on the NTC. Hydrologic methods used in this study included discrete discharge measurements to evaluate surface flow from the springs, and temperature measurements to trace groundwater movement beneath the springs. This data release contains discharge measurements and temperature data at four springs: Garlic, Bitter, Jack Spring East, and Jack Spring West.

Cone penetration data reported by Pacific Gas and Electric Company are reported here in support of a U.S. Geological Survey background study on hexavalent chromium concentrations in Hinkley Valley, California. Cone penetration tests are a minimally invasive direct push method of measuring subsurface properties, primarily related to soil friction and resistance to penetration. These data can be interpreted to provide information on soil types and behaviors.

This page presents water levels measured by consultants in six wells in Hinkley, California, between 2017-2018. Water levels were taken in coordination with quarterly sampling done by Blaine Tech personnel for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Water levels from these wells are reported here in support of a U.S. Geological Survey study on background concentrations of hexavalent chromium.

Data were collected to help define hydrologic controls on groundwater movement as part of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study on background concentrations of hexavalent chromium in groundwater aquifers near Hinkley, California. Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater at Hinkley is undergoing bioremediation using added ethanol as a reductant in a volume of the aquifer defined as the In-situ Reduction Zone (IRZ). This treatment effectively reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is rapidly sequestered by sorption to aquifer particle surfaces and by co-precipitation within iron or manganese bearing minerals forming in place as reduction proceeds. Successful mitigation of the extant Cr(VI) plume is projected to require 90 to 220 years, at which time ethanol loading will likely cease.
