Species distribution models often use climate data to assess contemporary and/or future ranges for animal or plant species. Land use and land cover (LULC) data are important predictor variables for determining species range, yet are rarely used when modeling future distributions. In this study, maximum entropy modeling was used to construct species distribution maps for 50 North American bird species to determine relative contributions of climate and LULC for contemporary (2001) and future (2075) time periods. Results indicate species-specific response to climate and LULC variables; however, both climate and LULC variables clearly are important for modeling both contemporary and potential future species ranges....

The Vista tool is used to create a Scenario of the CAs affecting the Grassland Bird Assemblage CE and applies user-input Landscape Condition Model (LCM) scores to generate ESAs for each of the CEs. The LCM consists of Site Impact scores and impact Distances for each CA category. Site Impact scores are a value between 0 and 1 representing the impact of the CA on the relevant CEs. A score close to 1 indicates negligible or no impact from that CA. A score close to 0 indicates the highest possible impact, e.g. an interstate highway that makes the area in which it occurs completely unsuitable for the CE. Distances are set in meters and extend the impact of the CA from the footprint out for the specified distance, declining...

This project modeled the effects of future climate change on bird distributions and their status in the lower 48 states. Its goal was to examine more than 600 species of birds and produce more than 100 predictive scenarios for each species, resulting in more than 600,000 data layers for birds. The purpose of the project was to provide information critical to the design and implementation of management and conservation strategies that could be used by all Landscape Conservation Cooperatives.
This dataset consists of modeled projections of land use and land cover for the State of California for the period 2001-2101. The Land Use and Carbon Scenario Simulator (LUCAS) model was initialized in 2001 and run forward on an annual time step to 2100. In total 9 simulations were run with 10 Monte Carlo replications of each simulation. Two base scenarios were selected from Sleeter et al., 2017 (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2017EF000560/full) for analysis, including a "business-as-usual" (BAU) land use scenario and a scenario based on "medium" population projections. For each base scenario we ran three alternative conservation scenarios where we simulated conversion of lands into conservation easements....
The success of carbon capture, storage and sequestration as a greenhouse gas mitigation strategy will be, in part, dependent on the regulatory framework used to govern its implementation. Creating a science-based regulatory framework that is designed with enough flexibility to encourage greenhouse gas offset activity, effective means of measuring the costs of taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ample protection for human and ecosystem health may prove challenging. For the purposes of this paper we will assume that there is an existing incentive to capture, store and sequester carbon and focus on how to regulate the process. Accounting practices and precursory crediting rules for biological sinks...
The condition of landscapes and the ecological communities within them is strongly related to levels of human activity. Human-dominated land uses and especially the intensity of the uses can affect adjacent ecological communities through direct, secondary, and cumulative impacts. Using land use data and a development-intensity measure derived from energy use per unit area, an index of Landscape Development Intensity (LDI) can be calculated for watersheds of varying sizes to estimate the potential impacts from human-dominated activities that are experienced by ecological systems within those watersheds. The intended use of the LDI is as an index of the human disturbance gradient (the level of human induced impacts...
