A high spatial resolution storm surge model was developed for the YK Delta area to assess biological impacts of storm surges under current and future climates. Storm surges are expected to be more frequent and more severe in the YK Delta area due to climate change and sea level rise. The biological impacts in the YK Delta due to the changed storm surges could be extreme. The model was assessed with respect to measured water level data at the coast and, where available, spatial extent of inundation, for 6 storms from the period 1992 to 2011. In total, inundation projections from 9 historical storms (5 from the assessment + 4 others) were developed. For each storm, an spatial inundation index (time-integral of water...

This project resulted in an extensive mapping of coastal change along the entire coastline of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). The work provides important baseline information on the distribution and magnitude of landscape changes over the past 41 years. The extent of change to the coastline and to coastal features, such as spits, barrier islands, estuaries, tidal guts and lagoons, was known to be substantial in some areas along the coast (e.g., portions of the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta), although the extent of change along the full Bering Sea coast was not well documented. With this analysis, changes can be summarized for different land ownerships or other units to assess the extent of recent...

Spreadsheet for identifying individual storms for the Stochastic Empirical Loading Dilution Model (SELDM) . The spreadsheet was used in conjunction with the SELDM simulations used in the publication: Stonewall, A.J., and Granato, G.E., 2019, Assessing potential effects of highway and urban runoff on receiving streams in total maximum daily load watersheds in Oregon using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5053, 116 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195053.
The Middle Fork Willamette River basin encompasses 3,548 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the mainstem Willamette River. Fall Creek basin encompasses 653 square kilometers and drains to the Middle Fork Willamette River. In cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey evaluated geomorphic responses of downstream river corridors to annual drawdowns to streambed at Fall Creek Lake. This study of geomorphic change is focused on the major alluvial channel segments downstream of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dams on Fall Creek and the Middle Fork Willamette River, as well as the 736 hectare Fall Creek Lake. Reservoir erosion during streambed drawdown results in sediment...

Force gage measurements were used to parameterize a force balance model for the initiation of sediment motion and thus characterize bed mobility for two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley. These data were acquired to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. The force gage measurements were made at the Merced River Ranch and Robinson Reach field sites and involved using a spring-resisting force gage to push a given submerged particle in a bed-parallel downstream...

Fall Creek Basin encompasses 653 square kilometers and drains to the Middle Fork Willamette River. In cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey evaluated geomorphic responses to dam operations at Fall Creek Lake in which lake levels are temporarily lowered to streambed each fall or winter to facilitate downstream passage of juvenile spring Chinook salmon. Reservoir erosion during these streambed drawdown operations results in sediment delivery to downstream reaches. This study of geomorphic change is focused on the major alluvial channel segments...
Shapefiles Defining Areas of Analysis for Proglacial Sediment Studies on Mount Rainier, 1960 to 2017
This repository contains suites of shapefiles defining areas of analysis used in Anderson and Shean (2021). Three types of shapefiles are included, each bundled into a zip file: First, polygons delineating areas with elevation changes we judge to be overwhelmingly due to sediment motion (as opposed to snow or ice melt), used to calculate final volumes of change reported in Anderson and Shean (2021). File names indicate basin and DoD interval associated with a given polygon. Second, polygons defining areas used for averaging Landsat NDVI values. Third, regular valley-spanning cross sections used to calculate longitudinal profiles of the valley floors over time. Calculating the minimum elevation across these cross...
The Siletz River Basin encompasses 970 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the Pacific Ocean. In cooperation with the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon (CTSI), the U.S. Geological Survey is evaluating how streamflow and bedload sediment conditions may influence mainstem spawning habitats for spring Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytschya) and Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus). This study encompasses approximately 105 kilometers of the Siletz River, including bedrock and alluvial reaches, between Elk Creek and the Pacific Ocean. More detailed evaluation for this study focuses on a 18.8-kilometer segment of the Siletz River between Wildcat Creek near Moonshine County Park...
Photogrammetrically Derived Digital Elevation Models of Mount Rainier Proglacial Areas, 1960 to 2017
This repository contains a suite of digital elevation models (DEMs), derived from aerial or satellite imagery, covering glacier and proglacial areas on Mount Rainier between 1960 and 2017. Data are available for the Emmons, Winthrop, Nisqually, and South Tahoma Glaciers and their associated proglacial areas. These data were used in Anderson and Shean (2021) to calculate DEMs of Difference (DoDs) and assess topographic change in these proglacial settings. Aerial lidar datasets used in that analysis are available through the Washington Department of Natural Resources lidar repository (https://lidarportal.dnr.wa.gov/). The DEMs stored here have been coregistered to the 2008 Mount Rainier aerial lidar dataset. Differencing...
The COAWST (Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport) modeling framework was extended to add two key processes that affect marshes, erosion due to lateral wave thrust (LWT) and vertical accretion due to biomass productivity. The testing of the combined effects of integrating these two processes was done by modeling marsh complexes within Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and the Barnegat Bay (BB) estuary, New Jersey, USA. The simulations were performed first for the month of May 2015 for the entire Barnegat Bay. The Barnegat Bay estuary solution was used to force the two smaller domains that encompass Reedy and Dinner Creeks and are modeled for the same time period.

Since 2008, large-scale restoration programs have been implemented along the Willamette River, Oregon, to address historical losses of floodplain habitats for native fish. For much of the Willamette River floodplain, direct enhancement of floodplain habitats through restoration activities is needed because the underlying hydrologic, geomorphic, and vegetation processes that historically created and sustained complex floodplain habitats have been fundamentally altered by dam construction, bank protection, large wood removal, land conversion, and other influences (for example, Hulse and others, 2002; Wallick and others, 2013). For gravel-bed rivers like the Willamette River, planimetric changes (defined here as geomorphic...
This data release consists of four Excel files (one for each cross section) containing worksheets corresponding to each channel cross-section survey (~25-31) between 1996 and 2014. These worksheets contain the basic survey data (dates, instruments, reference elevations, foresights, distances from reference pins, and elevations). An additional worksheet contains the measured unit-volume (m^3/m) of chronostratigraphic units deposited during the time interval between two sequential surveys and the unit-volumes of each chronostratigraphic unit eroded during the same time interval. A final worksheet contains the age and transit-time distributions for selected surveys.
