Working in cooperation with EPA, the USGS coordinated the collection of fish tissue for processing and analyses by the EPA Region 10 Manchester Environmental Laboratory located in Port Orchard, WA. This effort was being tied to existing operations work performed by state wildlife agencies in Idaho and Montana (Ross and others, 2018). Annually, in late August and September, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG), the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP), and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho conduct population surveys on the Kootenai River. During the 2018 electrofishing population surveys, state wildlife agency personnel also retained collected fish for the present tissue sampling effort. Design...

Estuaries provide critical habitat for a vast array of fish and wildlife but are also a nexus for core economic activities that mobilize and concentrate contaminants that can threaten aquatic species. Selenium (Se), an essential element and potent reproductive toxin, is enriched in parts of the San Francisco Estuary (SFE) to levels known to cause toxicity, yet the risk of Se to species that inhabit the SFE is not well understood. We quantified Se concentrations in muscle, liver, and ovary of the demersal cyprinid Sacramento Splittail from six regions in the SFE at three time points (fall 2010-11, spring 2017) to evaluate Se exposure risk. Here we report fish morphological attributes, total selenium concentrations...

The surface water water-quality data were compiled from Water Quality Portal (https://www.waterqualitydata.us/) (National Water Quality Monitoring Council, 2015), USGS’s NAWQA Project’s data compilation (Oelsner and others, 2017) or the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana Bureau of Mines, 2021), The compilation contains data for chloride, pH, specific conductance, sulfate, total dissolved solids (TDS) collected between water year 1970 to 2014. In addition 10 metals (aluminum, arsenic, barium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, selenium strontium, and zinc) analyzed during water years 1993 through 2014. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken a mineral resources assessment for tungsten for a portion of the Great Basin in parts of western Nevada and east-central California. This data release provides the Great Basin Tungsten Database: the geospatial and geologic data, and results of chemical analyses for 46,955 samples collected in the assessment area, extracted from the USGS National Geochemical Database. These rock records were collected as part of various programs and projects at the USGS and analyzed from 1963 to 2015. The database represents rock records, each comprising one best value chemical determination for each analyzed chemical species, that include skarns, carbonate lithologies (for example,...

Canadian discrete water quality data and daily streamflow records were evaluated using the Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Seasons (WRTDS) model implemented with the EGRET R package (Hirsch et al. 2010, Hirsch and De Cicco 2015). Models were used to estimate loads of solutes and evaluate trends for three constituents of interest (selenium, nitrate, and sulfate). Six models were generated; one model for each of the three constituents of interest, in each of the two major tributaries to Lake Koocanusa: the Kootenay River at Fenwick (BC08NG0009), and the Elk River above Highway 93 Near Elko (BC08NK0003). Data were obtained by downloading data from the British Columbia Water Tool (https://kwt.bcwatertool.ca/surface-water-quality,...

The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environment Laboratory (MSEEL) site is a long-term field site and laboratory at the Northeast Natural Energy LLC (NNE) production facility, adjacent to the Monongahela River, located in western Monongalia County, West Virginia, USA. NNE began drilling two horizontal production wells, MIP (Morgantown Industrial Park) -5H and MIP-3H, in the Marcellus Shale in 2014. The wells were completed in December 2015. Large volumes of wastewater are generated with natural gas production. These wastewaters contain organic and inorganic chemical constituents from fracturing fluids used during drilling and stimulation of gas in host rocks/shale, as well as chemical compounds that are derived from...

This data release and accompanying spreadsheet illustrate the ecosystem scale selenium model for Lake Koocanusa described in USGS Open-File Report 2020-1098, "Understanding and Documenting the Scientific Basis of Selenium Ecological Protection in Support of Site-Specific Guidelines Development for Lake Koocanusa, Montana, U.S.A., and British Columbia, Canada." All report sections, equations, and tables referenced in this data release and spreadsheet are from that report. Two models are described in the OFR. Results for several different “runs” of this model with different model input parameters and assumptions are included in this data release. The spreadsheet calculations that produced those results are also included...

Tree swallow, Tachycineta bicolor, nestlings were collected from 76 sites in the Great Lakes which included multiple sites at 27 Areas of Concern (AOCs) and 12 sites not listed as AOCs from 2010 to 2015. Livers were harvested and analyzed for 21 elements. Mercury concentrations differed among AOCs; however, all livers analyzed had concentrations well within background and generally comparable or lower than most sites outside of the Great Lakes. Mercury, the only element specifically identified in the designation of AOCs, does not seem to pose a threat to birds at any of the AOCs monitored. In contrast, selenium (Se) concentrations were elevated at sites on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan to levels that could...

The trace element selenium is an essential element with a narrow window between concentrations needed to support life and those that cause toxicity to egg laying organisms. Selenium bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is primarily the result of trophic transfer through food webs and is poorly predicted by dissolved concentrations in freshwater bodies. To better understand the hydrologic and biological dynamics that control selenium accumulation into fishes of the Lower Gunnison River Basin (Colorado), ecosystem scale selenium accumulation models were developed from data collected between June 2015 and October 2016.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Data and supporting information from samples collected during 2015-16 can be can be accessed from this link. The U.S. Geological Survey is studying Lake Koocanusa, a border reservoir between British Columbia in Canada and Montana, in collaboration with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 8). This work is part of a multi-agency project to apply an ecosystem-scale selenium modeling methodology (Presser and Luoma, 2010) to the lake to support development of site-specific selenium guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. A conceptual model framework was published in 2017 (Jenni, Naftz, and Presser, 2017) to serve as a coherent and...

This data release provides descriptions of more than 100 mining districts, mines, and mineral occurrences (deposits and prospects) within the United States that are reported to contain enrichments of rhenium (Re). These mineral occurrences include mined deposits, exploration prospects, and other occurrences with notable concentrations of rhenium. The inclusion of a particular mineral occurrence in this database is not meant to imply that it has economic potential. Rather, these occurrences were included to capture the distribution and characteristics of the known, reported rhenium occurrences in the United States. Rhenium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. Most rhenium occurs in the mineral molybdenite,...

This Data Release presents multi-agency data for selenium concentrations in ecosystem media that includes water column, suspended particulate material, zooplankton, invertebrates, and fish. Because the data are compiled from multiple sources, the significant figures used to report contaminant concentrations and other metrics may not be internally consistent. These data will serve as the basis for ecosystem-scale modeling of Lake Koocanusa, a bi-national reservoir in Montana and British Columbia. Spreadsheets are ordered in a food-web format to facilitate modeling that emphasizes spatially and temporally paired data. Selenium concentrations are species-specific for fish and taxa-specific for invertebrates to address...
