During the spring and summer of 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, Lower Mississippi – Gulf Water Science Center, conducted single well slug tests on selected wells within the Mississippi Alluvial Plain in Arkansas and Mississippi to estimate hydraulic conductivity (K) and transmissivity (T) values for the aquifers in which the wells are screened. A total of 324 tests were conducted on 48 wells. The computer software AQTESOLV version 4.50.002 (HydroSOLVE, Inc., 2007) was used to interpret the slug test data to estimate K and T values. A three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW-2005) of the Mississippi embayment, South-Central United States, was developed as part of a national project initiated by the U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program to provide updated assessments of groundwater availability in important principal aquifers across the United States. The goals of the national assessment are to document effects of human activities on water levels and groundwater storage, explore climate variability effects on the regional water budget, and evaluate the adequacy of data networks at a regional scale. The existing three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW-2005) of the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer system (MERAS), South-Central United States, was updated with: 1) higher stream density; 2) more spatially refined recharge; 3) better estimates of water use; 4) more recent time period simulated; 5) more realistic storage conceptualization; and 6) more robust handling of dry nodes through use of MODFLOW-NWT.
