A program to control wolves (Canis lupus) in interior Alaska in 1993 and 1994 did not result in expected increases in calf survival in the Delta caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd (DCH). Therefore, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducted a study to determine causes of calf mortality during 1995-1997 and monitored recruitment, mortality, and population size annually in the DCH for 6 years after wolf control ended. Despite removal of 60-62% of the autumn 1993 wolf population, wolves still killed 25% of 166 radiocollared calves between birth in mid- to late May and 30 September during 1995-1997. Although autumn calf:cow ratios in the DCH increased after wolf control, similar increases in calf:cow ratios occurred...

PURPOSE: The implementation of a revised comprehensive conservation plan for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge of Alaska is proposed. The plan, which would perpetuate or replace the currently in force 1985 management plan, would guide management of the refuge for the next 15 years. The 1.32-mllion-acre refuge, which lies on the Kenai Peninsula along the Turnagain Arm and Cook Inlet, has been described as "Alaska in miniature" with reference to its cross-section of Alaskan habitats. Key issues identified during scoping include those related to large-scale habitat changes and the use of fire, management of existing facilities for public use while ensuring natural resource protection, enhancement of wildlife-dependent...

In 2009 and 2010, the National Park Service (NPS) Arctic and Central Alaska Networks tested aerial distance sampling and hierarchical modeling to estimate Dall's sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) abundance in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (GAAR). This report details the field methods and summarizes results for the 2010 survey. Further information regarding data analysis and interpretation for both surveys can be found in Schmidt et al. (2011). In 2010, we flew 318 20-km long contour transects generated on a 9-km grid across available sheep habitat in GAAR (26,921 km2 survey area). We detected 220 groups totaling 557 individuals on 86 transects. Data were analyzed using spatially-explicit Bayesian modeling,...

Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou (Gmelin)) populations are in decline throughout much of their range. With increasingly rapid industrial, recreational, residential, and agricultural development of caribou habitat, tools are required to make clear, knowledgeable, and explainable management decisions to support effective conservation of caribou and their range. We developed a series of Bayesian belief networks to evaluate conservation policy scenarios applied to caribou seasonal range recovery areas. We demonstrate the utility of the networks to articulate ecological understanding among stakeholders, to clarify and explicitly depict threats to seasonal range. We also show how simulated forecasts of spatially...

Boreal caribou Rangifer tarandus are nationally listed as Threatened. Land use jurisdictions, including communities and land claim organizations, will have to identify, steward and monitor boreal caribou habitat both for land use planning in the Deh Cho Region (southern Northwest Territories (NWT)) and for recovery planning in the NWT. Mapping current distribution (occupation) and potential habitat use (occurrence) for boreal caribou is a first step for both land use planning and recovery planning. We modeled occurrence at the landscape scale using generalized additive model analysis and Akaike Information Criterion with habitat information from spectral classification and habitat attributes such as cutlines, fire...

Understanding the impact of indirect habitat loss resulting from avoidance of human infrastructure is an important conservation priority. We evaluated resource selection for 10 global positioning system collared northern mountain woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in British Columbia, Canada, with seasonal resource selection functions (RSF) developed at the second-order (landscape) and third-order (within home range) scales. To estimate how much habitat was lost due to avoidance, we estimated the zone of influence (ZOI) around multiple developments and modeled realized and potential habitat. Potential habitat was approximated by removing the ZOI from RSF models. By calculating the spatial difference between...
