This report and digital data release presents 326 new geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples, including 106 rock, 164 stream sediment, and 56 heavy mineral concentrate (pan concentrate) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM as part of a mineral-reconnaissance project in the Selawik Hills area of northwestern Alaska. Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The text and analytical data and tables associated with this report are being released...

In 2012, the State of Alaska established its Strategic and Critical Minerals (SCM) Assessment project, a State-funded Capital Improvement Project (CIP), to evaluate Alaska's statewide potential for SCM resources. The project is being implemented by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), and involves obtaining new airborne-geophysical, geological, and geochemical data. For decades, the Ray Mountains area of west-central Alaska has been explored for its potential mineral resources. To further assess the rare-earth-element (REE) potential of the State-selected and top-filed lands in the Ray Mountains area, mineral-resource geologists at DGGS carried out a helicopter-supported geological and...

This report presents 40Ar/39Ar step-heating geochronology results for igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys' (DGGS) Talkeetna Mountains C-4 Quadrangle and Adjoining Areas geologic mapping project. Hornblende-bearing gabbro returned a Late Triassic crystallization age consistent with regional results for Nikolai Greenstone-related magmatism. We determined Early Jurassic metamorphic ages for hornblende and sericite from two samples of upper greenschist to amphibolite grade metavolcanic rocks. Our results indicate that a granodiorite pluton intruding Wrangellia in the study area has a Middle Jurassic age consistent with the Talkeetna Arc, indicating that the Wrangellia...

The State of Alaska's Strategic and Critical Minerals (SCM) Assessment project, a State-funded Capital Improvement Project (CIP), is designed to evaluate Alaska's statewide potential for SCM resources. The SCM Assessment is being implemented by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), and involves obtaining new airborne-geophysical, geological, and geochemical data. For the geochemical part of the SCM Assessment, thousands of historical geochemical samples from DGGS, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and U.S. Bureau of Mines archives are being reanalyzed by DGGS using modern, quantitative, geochemical-analytical methods. The objective is to update the statewide geochemical database to more clearly...

This report and digital data release presents 286 new geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples, including 93 rock, 110 stream sediment, 52 soil, and 28 heavy mineral concentrate (pan concentrate) samples, as well as 3 samples of indeterminate type. These samples were originally collected as part of studies by the USBM in the Circle mining district, western Crazy Mountains, and Lime Peak area of the White Mountains, Circle Quadrangle, east-central Alaska. Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program...

This DGGS report presents 40Ar/39Ar age dating results from selected mafic to intermediate intrusions encountered during a geological and geochemical resource assessment project in the Gulkana, Healy, Mount Hayes, and Talkeetna Mountains quadrangles. Three intrusions returned mid-Cretaceous crystallization ages, while one olivine gabbro returned a Late Triassic crystallization age. Two altered or metamorphosed samples yielded Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous ages. Analyses were performed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geochronology Laboratory, and results were reported by Paul Layer and Jeff Benowitz. Products included in this data release are: a summary of sample collection method; the laboratory report,...

This report and digital data release presents 26 new geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples, including 4 rock, 9 stream sediment, 3 soil, and 10 heavy mineral concentrate (pan concentrate) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM to investigate rare-earth-element occurrences associated with the Kook Lake intrusive complex, Sitka Quadrangle, Alaska. The mineral-resources group from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) carried out a geologic mapping project in the Talkeetna Mountains C-4, C-3, and B-4 quadrangles from July 23 through August 3, 2014. This project is a part of a multi-year project focusing on improving the publicly-available geological and geochemical data and assessing the mineral potential of the less-explored extension of the western Wrangellia terrane. This program of geologic mapping and rock sampling was conducted as part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program and the state of Alaska's Strategic Minerals Assessment project, an initiative designed to evaluate Alaska's potential...

Late Triassic mafic to ultramafic intrusions in the Wrangellia terrane are host to magmatic sulfide nickel-copper-cobalt and platinum-group element (PGE) mineralization. DGGS's mineral-resources group carried out a geologic mapping project in the eastern Denali Highway region between Watana Creek and Paxson from July 29 through August 7, 2015. This project is part of a multi-year effort focusing on improving the publicly available geological and geochemical data and assessing the mineral potential of the less-explored extension of the western Wrangellia terrane; other data resulting from this project include geophysical surveys and several geochemical datasets. This program of geologic mapping and rock sampling...

The State of Alaska's Strategic and Critical Minerals (SCM) Assessment project, a State-funded Capital Improvement Project, is designed to evaluate Alaska's statewide potential for SCM resources. The SCM Assessment is being implemented by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), and involves obtaining new airborne-geophysical, geological, and geochemical data throughout Alaska. In 2014 and 2015 DGGS also collected and geochemically analyzed 114 rock samples from mafic and ultramafic rocks to evaluate the Tonsina area's potential for platinum-group elements, nickel, and chromium; analytical results are presented in this report.
