This dataset contains the Flow Direction (FD) for South America from the Hydrologic Derivatives for Modeling and Analysis (HDMA) database. The data were developed and distributed by processing units. There are 10 processing units for South America. The distribution files have the number of the processing unit appended to the end of the zip file name (e.g. sa_dem_3.zip contains the DEM data for unit 3-2). The HDMA database provides comprehensive and consistent global coverage of raster and vector topographically derived layers, including raster layers of digital elevation model (DEM) data, flow direction, flow accumulation, slope, and compound topographic index (CTI); and vector layers of streams and catchment boundaries....
This dataset contains the processing units for the African continent from the Hydrological Derivatives for Modeling and Analysis (HDMA) database. The HDMA database provides comprehensive and consistent global coverage of raster and vector topographically derived layers, including raster layers of digital elevation model (DEM) data, flow direction, flow accumulation, slope, and compound topographic index (CTI); and vector layers of streams and catchment boundaries. The coverage of the data is global (-180º, 180º, -90º, 90º) with the underlying DEM being a hybrid of three datasets: HydroSHEDS (Hydrological data and maps based on SHuttle Elevation Derivatives at multiple Scales), Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation...
A new and more complete version of this dataset can be found at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9QQTKA0. This dataset contains information about waterfall location and characteristics. It also provides a linear reference to two National Hydrography Datasets. This dataset is based off the World Waterfall Database (WWD) and other source datasets. The coordinates and spatial attributes from the WWD were used to help verify locations in Google Earth. From there, the USGS HydroLink Tool was used to link data to both the NHDPlusV2.1 (1:100,000 scale) and NHD High Resolution Dataset (1:24,000 scale). This dataset currently includes waterfalls from the states of Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri....

Human impacts occurring throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States, including urbanization, agriculture, and dams, have multiple effects on the region’s streams which support economically valuable stream fishes. Changes in climate are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing stream water temperatures. To manage streams for current impacts and future changes, managers need region-wide information for decision-making and developing proactive management strategies. Our project met that need by integrating results of a current condition assessment of stream habitats based on fish response to human land use, water quality impairment,...

We developed ecological indicators of stream macroinvertebrates in two regions of the Midwestern USA dominated by row-crop agriculture. Indicators were identified in a hierarchical fashion. Reach-scale variables related to macroinvertebrate attributes were first identified, and then catchment-scale variables related to those reach-scale variables were identified. Reach-scale indicators common to both regions were % fine sediments, number of habitats, and width:depth ratio. SD of elevation and % commercial land use were selected as catchment-scale indicators in both regions. Our analyses revealed a multi-scale mechanistic relationship between macroinvertebrate attributes associated with degraded conditions (i.e.,...

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents a scaled version of the headwater stream temperature tolerance index based on a model developed by Dr. Ben Letcher and associates at the USGS Conte Anadromous Fish Lab, which is a measure of the relative sensitivity of stream temperatures to rising air temperatures. Specifically,...

This dataset contains the Flow Accumulation (FA) for Europe from the Hydrologic Derivatives for Modeling and Analysis (HDMA) database. The data were developed and distributed by processing units. There are 11 processing units for Europe. The distribution files have the number of the processing unit appended to the end of the zip file name (e.g. eu_dem_3_2.zip contains the DEM data for unit 3-2). The HDMA database provides comprehensive and consistent global coverage of raster and vector topographically derived layers, including raster layers of digital elevation model (DEM) data, flow direction, flow accumulation, slope, and compound topographic index (CTI); and vector layers of streams and catchment boundaries....

USGS Hydro-NHD is a tile cache base map that combines hydrography data in The National Map from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) along with the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD). The NHD is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of surface water (lakes, ponds, and reservoirs), paths through which water flows (canals, ditches, streams, and rivers), and related entities such as point features (springs, wells, stream gages, and dams). The information encoded about these features includes classification and other characteristics, delineation, geographic name, position and related measures, a "reach code" through which other information...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains over 8,000 streamgages across the U.S. Streamgages in Illinois are operated by the USGS Illinois-Iowa Water Science Center (USGS IL-IA WSC). Gage-height data at many USGS streamgages were collected on paper-punch tapes during the period of 1965 to 1985 in Illinois. These data were not saved in the National Water Information System (NWIS) due to lack of sufficient computer storage at that time. The USGS IL-IA WSC currently has the equivalent of 2,049 years of data from 152 streamgages on paper tapes stored at the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA) Federal Records Center that are not in NWIS. All of these data need to be stored in NWIS for public use before...
