The radiogenic isotope ratios of strontium (Sr) and uranium (U), specifically 87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U, are useful tracers of water-rock interactions. Sr isotopic compositions in groundwater are mostly controlled by dissolution or exchange with Sr contained in aquifer rocks whereas the U isotopic compositions are more controlled by chemical and kinetic processes during groundwater flow. Insights into groundwater circulation patterns through the shallow subsurface at Yellowstone National Park can be aided by investigations of these isotopes. This data release contains tables with new isotope data consisting of concentrations (Sr, U) and radiogenic-isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr, 234U/238U) for water samples from...

This data release presents geochemical analyses of silicate melt inclusions, host quartz phenocrysts, and biotite phenocrysts in samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from mid-Cenozoic rhyolitic rocks from northern Nevada. Igneous intrusions and volcanic rocks in this study encompass nineteen rhyolitic samples from five magmatic centers across northeastern Nevada. Rhyolites were emplaced throughout northeastern Nevada over about an 8 million year timespan (41–33 mega-annum) in a variety of eruptive styles and volumes, ranging from meter-wide dikes to caldera-forming ignimbrites, and were roughly contemporaneous with regional ore deposition. Samples were prepared for petrographic and scanning electron...

At 11:21 p.m. (Hawaii Standard Time [HST]) on November 27, 2022, Mauna Loa volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi started erupting from fissures at its summit caldera, Mokuʻāweoweo. This was followed shortly afterwards by the opening of a segment of fissures in the direction of the Southwest Rift Zone. These were mostly within the structural boundary of the caldera, so their location is denoted as ‘South Caldera,’ with the exception of a short fissure that extended into the uppermost Southwest Rift Zone. By November 28, activity had shifted to four fissures that opened in the upper Northeast Rift Zone (Lynn and others, 2023). By December 2, eruptive activity was focused from Northeast Rift Zone fissure 3A supplying lava...

This geodatabase contains all the geologic map information for the Geologic Map of the San Juan caldera cluster, southwestern Colorado and is part of U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Investigations Map Series I-2799. The San Juan Mountains are the largest erosional remnant of a composite volcanic field that covered much of the southern Rocky Mountains in middle Tertiary time. The San Juan field consists mainly of intermediate-composition lavas and breccias, erupted about 35-30 Ma from scattered central volcanoes (Conejos Formation) and overlain by voluminous ash-flow sheets erupted from caldera sources. In the central San Juan Mountains, eruption of at least 8,800 km3 of dacitic-rhyolitic magma as nine major ash...

On 25 July 2016, helicopter-based measurements were made of the volcanic gases emitted from Mount Cleveland, Alaska, USA. An upward-looking differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) system was used to measure incident scattered solar ultraviolet radiation while traversing beneath the plume on multiple occasions. These data were used to derive volcanic SO2 emission rates. Additionally, a Multicomponent Gas Analyzer System (Multi-GAS) was used to make measurements of trace gas concentrations while on a dedicated measurement flight passing through the volcanic plume. Radiance spectra and gas compositions were both recorded at 1 second time resolution. Each spectrum and gas measurement was stamped with the...
Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during June 2012 along 556 line-kilometers over Iliamna Volcano, Alaska. These data were collected in support of alteration and volcano flank instability mapping as part of the USGS Volcano Hazards Program. Data were acquired by SkyTEM Survey ApS SkyTEM304 system with the Soloy Helicopters Eurocopter Astar 350 B3 and Bell 407 dual-moment, time-domain helicopter-borne electromagnetic system together with a Geometrics G822A cesium vapor magnetometer with Kroum KMAG4 counter. The survey was flown at a nominal flight height of 30 m above terrain along block-style lines with a nominal spacing of 250 m. The survey was designed to cover the summit and...

Summary: Siliceous sinter samples were collected from multiple geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in 2018. These silica sinter samples were collected and analyzed as a part of a multi-year research investigation into the age and geochemistry of hydrothermal features in the Upper Geyser Basin. Samples were collected along the stratigraphy of each feature. From these samples, we report 10Be, U-series, and 14C ages. Samples collected from Giant and Castle Geyser were further analyzed for their mineralogy, major and trace element concentrations, water content, and rare earth elements. This research was conducted under Yellowstone Research Permit YELL-2018-SCI-8030 and YELL-2018-SCI-5910....

Zircon grains separated from altered ash beds were analyzed to better understand the ages of the beds. Isotopic analyses for U-Pb geochronology and trace element geochemistry were performed simultaneously by secondary ion mass spectrometry using the Stanford-USGS SHRIMP-RG ion microprobe housed at Stanford University, USA. Analyses followed the analytical protocol and data acquisition conditions described by Watts et al. (2016). These data are reported in this release.

Measurement of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rates is a critical aspect of monitoring and studying active volcanoes. Changes in emission rate are often associated with changes in volcanic activity and in some cases may herald future changes in activity. At the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), emission rates of SO2 from Hawaiian volcanoes have been measured by ultraviolet spectrometer since the late 1970s [Casadevall and others, 1987]. Here we present a compilation of SO2 emission rate measurements made from 2018 to 2022. The emission rates (in t/d) span five orders of magnitude through a range of activity styles unprecedented in recent times, including caldera collapse [Anderson and others, 2019], the first prolonged...

These data are presented to geochemically characterize glass from the informally named Khonkho tephra, an ashfall deposit that crops out at the Khonkho Wankane archaeological site in Jesus de Machaca, Bolivia. The Khonkho tephra appears to have been emplaced by a major explosive eruption from a currently unknown volcanic source. The unit forms a marker bed at an archaeologically important stratigraphic level. These data are to accompany a publication that describes the tephra-fall deposit and its implications and will eventually be used to correlate the unit to samples from other locations where it crops out and to identify its source volcano and eruption. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive...

We installed an eddy covariance station on July 22, 2014 at the Horseshoe Lake tree kill area on Mammoth Mountain, CA to monitor variations in magmatic CO2 emissions. Since then, this station has measured CO2, H2O and sensible and latent heat fluxes, air temperature and pressure, and wind speed and direction on a half-hourly basis. We also measured soil CO2 fluxes across the area (0.32 km2) using the accumulation chamber method on July 23, 2014, June 20-21, 2015, July 15, 2016, July 27-28, 2017, July 31-August 1, 2018, and August 2-3, 2019. The eddy covariance and soil CO2 flux data sets were used to characterize temporal and spatial variations in magmatic CO2 emissions and their relationships to meteorological...

This data release presents geologic map data for the bedrock geology of the Durango 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. Geologic mapping incorporates new interpretive contributions and compilation from published geologic map data sources primarily ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:50,000 scale. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color image data sources to improve spatial resolution of the data. Spatial adjustments and new interpretations also eliminate mismatches at source map boundaries. This data set represents only the bedrock geology; deposits of unconsolidated, surficial materials that are typically, but not exclusively, Quaternary in...
Tephra samples were collected by Leah Morgan (now at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)) from the Hugub Area, Kesem-Kebena-Dulecha, Afar, Ethiopia. Sanidine grains were separated from the bulk sample and analyzed by argon geochronology at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, Scotland. The data indicate that the age of the Hugub Bed, which is rich in archarological artifacts, is ca. 500 ka. These results have broad implications in understanding late Acheulean archaeology in Ethiopia.
