These data are derived from the Pleistocene Sacarosa tephra-fall deposit (TFD) which erupted from Misti volcano, Arequipa, southern Peru. The deposit represents a major eruption of Misti and these data are used to characterize the deposit. The radiocarbon ages are from units bracketing the Sacarosa TFD and constrain its eruption age. Whole-rock major and trace element concentrations for Sacarosa pumice were determined by X-ray flourescence and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Density was measured for 89 pumice from six bulk samples of the Sacarosa TFD. These data are provided as part of an effort to characterize the Sacarosa TFD and determine its eruption age.

Lava flow hazards are usually thought to end when the erupting vent becomes inactive, but this is not always the case. At Kīlauea in August 2014, a spiny ʻaʻā flow erupted from the levee of a crusted perched lava lake that had been inactive for a month, and the surface of the lava lake subsided as the flow advanced downslope over the following few days. Topography constructed from oblique aerial photographs using structure-from-motion (SfM) software shows that the volume of the flow (~68,000 m3) closely matches the volume of subsidence of the crusted lava lake (~64,000 m3). The similarity of these volumes, along with the textural characteristics of the lava, shows that the lava that fed the flow had been stored...

This dataset represents a variety of scientific measurements of basalt rock outcrops in central Oregon, United States. It consists of field observations, geochemical measurements, paleomagnetic directional measurements, magnetic susceptibility, and geochronology data (Ar-Ar methodology). This dataset was collected from 2014-2022 by the authors.
In 2018, a large effusive eruption on the lower flank of Kīlauea Volcano was associated with collapse and subsidence of the summit caldera floor (Neal and others, 2019). The bottom of Halemaʻumaʻu, a crater nested within the summit caldera, subsided by more than 500 m. In July 2019, water was observed ponding on the deepest part of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor and the water rose and enlarged in area steadily over the next 16 months (Ingebritsen and others, 2020; Nadeau and others, 2020; Patrick and others, 2021). During the course of the rise, the lake surface appearance was highly dynamic and segmented, showing regions of variable color that changed from day to day (Nadeau and others, 2020). In June 2020 staff...

This release includes data collected during campaign GPS surveys at Kīlauea and Mauna Loa Volcanoes on the Island of Hawaiʻi in 2021. It includes data from a total of 63 sites occupied from January 1 to December 31, 2021. For each site, we include its measured raw data in daily files, Receiver INdependent EXchange (RINEX) files for each day, field log sheet(s), and associated metadata information. We also include a few days of data at the end of 2020 at 3 longer-term campaign sites at Kīlauea’s summit. These sites (109Y, NDDB, OVRL) were deployed in late December 2020 in response to the December 20, 2020, Kīlauea summit eruption. The authors thank USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory staff, volunteers, and collaborators...

We depict changing eruptive features within the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi with rapid-response digital elevation models (DEMs) acquired since a series of caldera-filling effusive eruptions began on December 20, 2020. These eruptions follow the caldera collapse of 2018, with new lava progressively filling the approximately 1-cubic-kilometer pit that formed between May and August of that year. The majority of the provided DEMs were constructed via structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry from either helicopter or uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) overflight images, with the remainder constructed via terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) from the Halemaʻumaʻu crater rim. These data were collected...

We performed laboratory time-dependent creep and stress-oscillation earthquake simulations in uniaxial loading in compression and tension on four blocks of porphyritic dacite collected from pyroclastic deposits of Mt. Fugen, of the Unzen-dake volcanic complex in Japan (referred to as ‘Unzen volcano’). Experiments were carried out in the Experimental Volcanology and Geothermal Research Laboratory at the University of Liverpool. Loading experiments were carried out in a 100 kN Instron 8800 uniaxial press at room temperature using both compression tests, and Brazilian disk tests to provide the indirect tensile strength (hereafter referred to as tensile strength/tension tests). Load was recorded by an Instron Dynacell...

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park,
Measurement of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rates is a critical aspect of monitoring and studying active volcanoes. Changes in emission rate are often associated with changes in volcanic activity and in some cases may herald future changes in activity. At the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), emission rates of SO2 from Hawaiian volcanoes have been measured by ultraviolet spectrometer since the late 1970s [Casadevall and others, 1987]. Here we present a compilation of SO2 emission rate measurements made from 2018 to 2022. The emission rates (in t/d) span five orders of magnitude through a range of activity styles unprecedented in recent times, including caldera collapse [Anderson and others, 2019], the first prolonged...

The 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano included both a large effusive eruption on the lower East Rift Zone and associated collapse and subsidence of the caldera floor at the summit (Anderson and others 2019; Neal and others 2019; Patrick and others 2020). Lava erupted from 24 fissures on the lower East Rift Zone over four months, with high effusion rates (>100 m3 s-1) often supplying lava into channelized flows (Dietterich and others 2021). This effusion produced an extensive lava flow field, covering 36 km2 and creating 3.5 km2 of new land along the coast (Zoeller and others 2020). The eruption was notable for the sustained high effusion rates, which produced complex and prolonged evolution of the lava flow field,...
These data are presented to geochemically characterize glass from the informally named Khonkho tephra, an ashfall deposit that crops out at the Khonkho Wankane archaeological site in Jesus de Machaca, Bolivia. The Khonkho tephra appears to have been emplaced by a major explosive eruption from a currently unknown volcanic source. The unit forms a marker bed at an archaeologically important stratigraphic level. These data are to accompany a publication that describes the tephra-fall deposit and its implications and will eventually be used to correlate the unit to samples from other locations where it crops out and to identify its source volcano and eruption. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive...

This data release presents geologic map data for the bedrock geology of the Durango 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. Geologic mapping incorporates new interpretive contributions and compilation from published geologic map data sources primarily ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:50,000 scale. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color image data sources to improve spatial resolution of the data. Spatial adjustments and new interpretations also eliminate mismatches at source map boundaries. This data set represents only the bedrock geology; deposits of unconsolidated, surficial materials that are typically, but not exclusively, Quaternary in...
Tephra samples were collected by Leah Morgan (now at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)) from the Hugub Area, Kesem-Kebena-Dulecha, Afar, Ethiopia. Sanidine grains were separated from the bulk sample and analyzed by argon geochronology at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, Scotland. The data indicate that the age of the Hugub Bed, which is rich in archarological artifacts, is ca. 500 ka. These results have broad implications in understanding late Acheulean archaeology in Ethiopia.

These data are derived from pumice and scoria from Pacheco stage (as defined by Harpel et al., 2021) tephra-fall deposits (TFD) emplaced between <21 ka and 2 ka by eruptions from Misti volcano, Arequipa, southern Peru. For each unit, these data derived from electron microprobe analysis include major-element analyses for glass, amphibole, plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxides, and, where present, olivine. Whole-rock major and trace element concentrations for each unit were determined by X-ray fluorescence. These data support detailed petrologic analysis of each Pacheco stage unit presented elsewhere. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement...
This dataset includes sample information, vesicularity by pycnometer, grain size and shape data by CAMSIZER, and measurements of crushed and thin section mounted grains by microscope. All studied samples were from scoria and air-fall-tephra deposits (most formed in Hawaiian lava fountains) collected around the summits of Mauna Loa and Kīlauea volcanoes, Island of Hawaiʻi. These data were used to derive methods for quickly being able to quantify vesicularity in near-real-time during an eruption response. The samples from Kīlauea all erupted from the summit area and include Keanakākoʻi units B, D, E, K1, and K2, the Halemaʻumaʻu eruptions in September 2021 and September 2023, and the Kīlauea Iki eruption that formed...

The 35-year-long Puʻuʻōʻō eruption, on the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano, was the longest volcanic eruption on the Island of Hawaiʻi in the past 100 years (Wright and Klein 2014; Mulliken and others 2023). The eruption, whose vent area was focused at and around Puʻuʻōʻō cone, produced episodic fountaining in its initial few years followed by decades of effusive activity that created an expansive lava flow field (Heliker and Mattox 2003; Orr and others 2015). While vents erupted on the flank of the cone, the activity within the cone’s crater often consisted of lava lakes, lava flows, and small spattering hornitos (Heliker and Mattox 2003; Heliker and others 2003). The crater also experienced several cycles of...
These tables contain geochemical data collected for tephra samples either correlated with or in the same type section with the Ibex Hollow Tuff. Most samples were collected by Andrei Sarna-Wojcicki and Mike Perkins, but some were submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey Tephrochronology Project for analysis by other persons. Electron microprobe analysis (EMA) was performed at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park California, at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City Utah, and at the University of Toronto in Toronto Ontario Canada. Bulk glass EMA results have been normalized to 100% anhydrous following standard normalization procedures. Individual shard analyses are unnormalized. Instrumental neutron activation...
